In recent years, it’s become increasingly common for influential artists and other collaborators to sketch upon and otherwise liven up what might be the ultimate icon of modern footwear, the Converse All Star Chuck Taylor. With collab-happy an accurate description of the current state of sneakers and streetwear in general, it’s less than shocking to see Cons’ pattern applied elsewhere.
Here we see cartoonist and illustrator Paul Pope hook up with DKNY for a canvas sneaker that bears a striking resemblance to the classic Chuck silhouette. Pope draws abstract designs along the heel and applies his alter ego PULPHOPE’s signature near the lower eyelets. A subdued affair in white and off-white, the sketches and yellow lining are nice touches. Warren Ellis relays a quote from Pope himself : “[t]he 2nd wave of Pulphope stuff from DKNY includes 3 different sets of hightop sneakers and two sets of sandals.” Paul also confirmed a 2009 release for the whole set and you can check Sneaker News for updates.

For anyone out there who has ever had their ankles broken on the court, Nike has the answer to your problems. According to their most recent ad campaign, the new Kobe 4 provides “ankle insurance” to anyone who wears them. Low cut, lightweight and responsive, the innovative sneaker is built for optimum performance when making quick stops and cuts.
This clever commercial features ankle insurance spokesperson, Kobe Bryant, last seen handing out ankle insurance business cards to DJ A.M. and Mike Epps, warning of the danger of broken ankles and offering some advice on what can be done to prevent it. If you want to keep your ankles safe or just look good out on the floor, you can get a pair of “Carpe Diem” Kobe 4′s on 1/17 at House of Hoops and other national retailers.

This year Jordan Brand will be issuing a wide variety of colorways for the Air Jordan 1. Among these will be the ‘White Curry Elephant’ Low. These shoes feature mainly a white upper, with ‘Curry Elephant’ print running from the heel, frontal, and eye stay panels. A curry Jumpman and 23 are featured on the shoes tongue, while a white Air Jordan ‘Wings’ logo graces the heel. The interior of the shoes appear to have ‘Cement Elephant’ material. Be on the look out for the Curry Elephant Air Jordan 1 to drop late 2009. Photos: Cubanbee on Niketalk

There may be no other sneaker icon in history as recognizable as the Converse All-Star. To Converse’s credit, they have consistently figured out ways to keep such a simple design fresh and relevant over a hundred year span. Continuing in this tradition, Converse Japan recently revealed the Expo Nippon line, a tribute to Japanese artisan culture.
The Owari-Shippo Hi Chuck Taylor is inspired by the art of the long revered Owari-Shippo porcelain crafts. The shoe’s appearance runs with the porcelain theme by using glassy patent leather to create the shine and color palette that the world famous crafts are known for. The color segments are divided by metallic piping and are highlighted by touches of gold and silver materials throughout. Two different colorways are available now at select Japanese retailers such as Flauge. via Freshness.

Upon the release of the Nike Hyperdunk several ads were ran with players wearing the shoes with common basketball ‘trash talk’ phrases written upon them. However one of these ads was almost immediately pulled upon the release because of it’s somewhat implied homophobic or over sexual tone. Nike’s ‘That Aint Right’ ad featured a player dunking the ball over a defender who’s face was just so happened to be buried in the offensive players crotch. In a surprise move several months later, Nike has released a set of Hyperdunks inspired by this controversial ad. The set features two colorways that seem to be taken directly from the players uniforms while the ‘That Aint Right’ slogan graces the bottom of the shoes icey out soles. The shoes are available now at Nike Store.com

The Nike Air Pegasus 89 is making a return to the sneaker scene twenty years later, in 2009, in two of it’s original colorways. The first colorway which has already been released in Light Bone, Vivid Blue, and Black has been well received by some of the vintage running shoe fanatics. Now Size? in the UK has launched the very first colorway of this shoe in Swan White and Red Neon, a classic to say the least. While the Pegasus 89 might not be as relevant in the street or sneaker scene today as an Air Max 90 or even an Air Max 1, the Pegasus 89 did help pave the way for one of Nike’s longest running models in the brand’s history. Pick your pair up now at Size?

There has been a lot of buzz regarding the Asics Gel Lyte III, such as the Patta x Asics Gel Lytespeed we showed you a couple days ago. In case you were worried that the last Asics Gel Lyte IIIs might too limited to get your hands on, we have four more fresh colorways to show you that might be a little easier to cop.
Going from left to right in the picture above, first off is the red/white/blue colorway with a bright use of the colors along the entire upper as ou see blue wrapping around the to-box and accents of red around the mid-panel and laces. Next is the black/grey/white colored Asics Gel Lyte III that looks to have a gradient mid-sole that goes from black to grey to white from the heel to the toe. The tan/navy and white/red/black both offer more bold options and more colors to help you mix and match. All four of these Gel Lyte IIIs will be available at Foot Lockers come February so stay on the look out. via FootLockerUnlocked

Aside from being one of the leading players in the NBA, Carmelo Anthony has also been seen wearing some of the dopest Air Jordan player exclusives on the floor. One of the first PEs given to Melo is this Air Jordan XII in what looks to be a home colorway. This shoe features a dominantly yellow and white colorway. The yellow covers the entire sole, bottom section of the upper, running up the ankle as well as the inner and the Jumpman on the tongue. White covers the rest of the leather upper while “MELO” is embroidered right around the heel. Like most dope PEs, these are not too likely to make it to any retail shelves, but our friends over at OSneaker have a pair now.
