Dead serious — that poster is a part of the Godzilla vs Barkley campaign (or at least a “retro +”, if that exact poster never existed). If we say that the colourway is inspired by that poster, why no reference to Barkley’s (censored) Suns jersey? I’m still not sure from where the pink is derived. FWIW, I think yours is still the best guess, though: the clear association to that ad campaign.

The more I thought about it, these clearly hearken back to the Godzilla vs. Barkley commercial(s). However, other than ‘radioactivity’, I can’t think of a clear source of inspiration for these colours.
