Tapestry Sneakers by Emma Sulzer

Weaving, crocheting, knitting – all crafts stereotype as an old fashioned woman’s pastime.  But tapestry artist, Emma Sulzer, is out to break that stigma, creating works to appeal to a younger audience.  Inspired by a friend’s sneaker collection and realizing that footwear has become a focal point of creativity and societal imput, Sulzer found it to be a great format to create new works.  After all, art reflects culture.

Taking about 40 hours to create each shoe, Emma first takes plastic sheets to create the frame of the shoe’s structure, then begins to weave around these pieces for the final composition.  Having years of experience in weaving, she is able to get down to notable details, including creating an icey effect for the Jordan 5 soles.  Though they aren’t wearable, every shoe looks super comfy to rock.  via SF
