The Air Jordan IX was released when Michael Jordan first retired from the game of basketball after the tragic death of his father; another interesting piece of data was that the Air Jordan IX was NEVER worn by Jordan in a basketball game until his final season in 2003 (although he did wear a cleat version during his time with the double-A Birmingham Barons).
