As a member of the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels and Charlotte Hornets, Larry Johnson was a beast on the court. A physical power forward with an emphasis on the “power,” LJ took the NBA by storm and was regularly drawing comparisons to a young Charles Barkley. Early into his career with the Hornets, Larry suffered a back injury that would plague him for the rest of his career. While he was never able to recapture the aggressive power game he was well known for early on, Larry wasn’t about to go out without a fight. He reinvented himself on the court, focusing more on his outside shot and all-around game. By the time he was a New York Knick, LJ had developed quite a nice jumper and was able to put in some solid years in NY thanks to his veteran craftiness and ability to adapt to a new style of play.
In fact, the highlight of his career came in those later days with the Knicks, as Larry buried the Pacers in the 1999 Eastern Conference Finals with what has affectionately come to be known as “The 4-Point Play.” Last week, Sneaker News had the pleasure of sitting down with Larry Johnson at the Packer Shoes x Fila FX-100 ’4-Point Play Pack’ release event in Teaneck, New Jersey. Larry was incredibly friendly and eager to talk shop on everything from the FX-100 re-launch, to the 4-point play, to his time at UNLV, and of course, you know we had to ask him some sneaker questions as well. Keep reading for the full interview with LJ and some more pics from the event. And if you’re still looking for a pair of the Packer x Fila FX-100′s, get over to Packer Shoes before they’re all gone.

The Mailman delivers. The Reignman will throw down on you all day. The Glove will lock you down. The 90′s featured some of the greatest and most memorable NBA nicknames (anyone remember Upper Deck’s ‘Famous Nicknames’ insert from ’93-’94?), immortalizing the elite players as superhuman beings on the court. Oklahoma City Thunder point-guard Russell Westbrook recently picked up the moniker ‘Why Not?’ during a snap interview, and although the name apparently came out of nowhere, it seems fitting for the high-flying speedster. Take that three? Why not. No-look pass to the Durantula? Why not. Attempt a dunk from two steps in front of the free-throw line over Pau Gasol during the Playoffs? WHY THE HELL NOT.
Westbrook surely fits the mold of the do-it-all point guard like Jason Kidd because he can score, dish, and ‘bound with the best of ‘em, and Mr. Why Not should do so while wearing this Nike Zoom Hyperfuse PE, featuring his brand new Why Not? PE logo on the ankle collar of the shoe on a colorway matching the OKC Thunder blue and orange.. Take a look at the detailed gallery after the jump and let us know what you think of Russell’s new nickname, and check out the video interview in which he creates his new alter ego!

A number of notable stars on television and the gridiron joined Foot Locker at the Foot Locker ‘On Our Feet’ Charity Event, which benefitted the UNCF. New York football stars Darrelle Revis, Ramses Barden, Keith Bulluck, former Jet Curtis Martin, former Duke standout Jay Williams, Man vs. Food’s Adam Richman, and Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford were dressed in crisp suits but each wore a pair of sleek kicks to the event. Both Revis (who tackles WRs) and Richman (who tackles three-foot-long burritos) rocked some nice Air Force 1s while Giants WR Ramses Barden wore the lifestyle-friendly Jordan Phly Legend. Other notable feet included Keith Bulluck’s Y-3 Kazuhiri. Take a look at the stars and their kicks after the jump and let us know which celeb had the best fit.

It’s common to see college kids ‘clean’ themselves up as they finish school and prepare to enter the workforce. Judging by the colorway and blocking pattern on this new Nike Air Max 90, it’s almost like at age 20, the AM90 decided to start dressing more conservatively in an effort to get itself into a more mature mindset. Anthropomorphization aside, these new Nineties are about as low-key as it gets and with a black nubuck upper that adds select white hits, these kids-sized joints will help get your little sneakerheads in line with the dominant trends in today’s streetwear/sneaker scene. Check out more shots of the latest Air Max 90 GS after the jump and stick with Sneaker News for updates on their release. via Dunk

LeBron James certainly had his fair share of moments in 2010, from the infamous one-hour special to the recent appearance at the release of the his first Miami-inspired Nike LeBron shoe. LeBron James has surpassed pro-athlete superstar status and has managed to be a prominent figure in pop culture due to his friendship with Jay-Z and and his out-and-about nature. Bron has been spotted in some notable kicks during those moments – like the Nike Toki he wore during his one-hour decision special or when he was spotted with Space Jams during the Redskins/Cowboys game at the beginning of this NFL Season. Continue reading for a look at some of his sneaker moments and head to Complex for the full feature.

The twenty-fifth Air Jordan shoe had high expectations and Tinker Hatfield was the one individual that could meet and surpass those standards. Perhaps the greatest footwear designer in history, Tinker Hatfield was responsible for some of the greatest sneaker designs known to man, and this new colorway of the Air Jordan 2010 pays special tribute to the man responsible for the sneaker-based cultural phenomenon that has grown exponentially over the last decade. Sharing the same colorway as the Air Jordan Alpha 1 Tinker Hatfield that released earlier this year, this Air Jordan 2010 sample was made for MJ himself, and features the luxurious beige cream leather upper with a solid black midsole and trim with the bright orange taking point in the inner lining. The translucent bottom sole also reveals the orange cushioning innards of the midsole. Continue reading for another look at Michael’s Air Jordan 2010 Tinker Hatfield PE and let us know what you think of this new colorway. If you’re in the Miami area, check these out on display now at SoleFly.

The Nike Air Royal Mid isn’t a shoe for the lighthearted. While a few basic colorways have released, Nike Sportswear has treated the Royal like the artsy middle-child, the one that is given permission to paint all over his/her bedroom walls and come to the dinner table with a funny hat. If you can recall all the Royal releases of this year – Macarons Pack, Harris Tweed ‘Vach’ Pack, Wingtip Pack – the shoe definitely appeals to those with a funkier taste in kicks. these two new colorways of the Royal Mid VT feature molded leather uppers with unique color-blocking techniques that doesn’t restrict itself to seams and panels – something you rarely ever see in a classically-designed Nike shoe. Both of these new colorways just hit Nikestore so take another look after the jump and grab a pair for yourself today.

Charles Barkley’s something special, ain’t he? He’s one of those personalities that stay in the public spotlight by being his true self, although we do wish his golf swing was just a joke. Other than his acumen for staying relevant in the pop culture scene outside of basketball, Charles Barkley is one of the few big-men in the NBA that had a successful signature line of kicks. You’ve got certified classics like the Air Force 180, the Godzilla joints, the Air Force Max, and among others, the Nike Air Max CB 34. The aggressive upper design paired with the full-length truncated Air Unit was someone only Barkley could pull off, and the all-new Glass Blue colorway isn’t a disrespect to the OG colorways. Check out the images of the Glass Blue CB 34′s and get familiar because these sick Retro joints just hit Long Island’s premier sneaker shop Extra Butter - but you can always grab a pair on eBay.
