Right around the Lakers’ annual Christmas Day game two years ago, Nike Basketball shook up the world by unveiling the unprecedentedly lowcut Zoom Kobe IV. Not only was this soccer-style silhouette a departure from the vast majority of basketball sneakers and particularly signatures, but it was the first flagship model to be launched with NIKEiD customization available from day one. The low cut has carried Kobe to back to back championships, but either way it’s definitely a sign of good things to come that the Nike Zoom Kobe VI will also hit NIKEiD this Friday, December 24th. A limited release of 24 pairs will be available each day till then and even if you’re not one of the earliest birds, you can have a crack at creating colorway after colorway to get your design perfect in advance of the Christmas Eve launch. Click below to see a few we mocked up and let us know if you have any good ideas.

The Air Jordan CP3.IV was unveiled to the media last week and Sneaker News was on hand in New Orleans to bring you an exclusive first look at Chris Paul’s fourth Jordan Brand signature sneaker. The Hornets’ point guard appeared on stage with the tagline ‘Quick Can’t Be Caught’, a phrase that serves as the unifying theme for the CP3.IV’s marketing campaign. The first we’ve seen from the CP3.IV since Nawlins is this series of QCBC micro-mercials, each of which runs about six seconds and ends with Paul making a money play to the tune of a cash register bell. It’s music to your ears if you’re a basketball fan, so click below to see the entire ‘Quick Can’t Be Caught’ video series.

The Gilbert Arenas sneaker watch continues, but it’s time to set our eyes down south. Arenas, who was traded over the weekend from the Washington Wizards to the Orlando Magic, made his debut in royal blue and white last night against the Atlanta Hawks; not only does he have big shoes to fill as he was acquired as a scoring threat to help the Orlando offense, he has quite a reputation to live up to as well, because he’s now wearing ’1′ on his chest. The previous bearers of the Orlando ’1′ jersey were Tracy McGrady, who during his years with Orlando was arguably the best single player in the NBA at the time, and Penny Hardaway, a legend from the 90′s with a successful signature shoe line and a cult following even years after his retirement.
For his first night out with his new team, Gilbert wore the Air Jordan XII in black and university blue, often dubbed the ‘Nubuck’ colorway for the nubuck material on the upper. Many Sneaker News readers who have been following Arenas’ kicks guessed that he’d whip out Royal Foamposite Ones, and although he didn’t, we’re sure it’s coming soon. Check out Gilbert in action after the jump and let us know what you think he’ll wear next. via ESPN.

The Nike ACG Air Wildwood was a no-brainer when it came time for Complex.com to craft their 50 Greatest Nike Trail Shoes list and this classic offroad runner is back in a colorway that’s calm by All Conditions Gear standards. This pair starts with a black leather and nubuck base, adding select Concord and white accents for a look that’s almost like an un-Air Jordan XI ‘Concord’. We have yet to see an Air Jordan x ACG pack but with Jordan Brand continuing to expand its boot offerings, could it be that far off? The Wildwood would be a great candidate and this new colorway just popped up from 95soleman on eBay.

Despite having not seen any of his kicks amongst the array of NBA looks we’ve seen so far this season, New Orleans Hornets power forward David West has been popping up on Sneaker News pretty much every week. D-West is a big part of the Sneaker News Fantasy Basketball squad and he’s been putting up nearly 19 and 7 all season rocking the Nike Air Max Hyped. This Air Max Hyped David West PE is done in white with Hornet-flavored accents for home games at New Orleans Arena, a sturdy design that offers D-West the kind of support his massive 6’9″ 240lb frame requires. They’re a bit heavier on accents than some of the Hyperdunk 2010 and Hyperfuse PEs we’ve seen so far, so how do these compare to other Nike Basketball player exclusives we’ve seen recently?

Converse is a brand synonymous with classic style and their latest effort is a fresh take on a sneaker whose model borrows the company’s nickname. The Converse One Star looks superb as the OS Classic 74 OX, a double-foxed leather lowtop whose apparent quality upon first glance might make you think John Varvatos designed em. These joints go beyond their supple leather uppers and those quirky double-layers of beige leather that extend the sole, adding a diagonal column of perforations that set off the signature side panel star in a way unlike any other pairs we’ve seen. Check out more after the jump and look for these at select Converse retailers like Taiwan’s Invincible, who’ll have em in stock on Saturday, the 18th.

Virginia Tech has its roots in a tradition of agriculture, engineering and military education. Here’s a new collection from RBK in Hokie colors that’d be well received by their Air Force ROTC cadets, the Reebok Pump Flight Jacket Pack. This trio of ’90s pumps is largely burgundy with select orange hits on a white sole. The upper is nylon like you’d expect from the pack theme but these add a healthy portion of suede to give these a premium feel. Click below for more shots and look for these at Reebok retailers soon; they just touched down at atmos Tokyo.

At a quick glance, the Team SneakerNews fantasy basketball squad doesn’t look all that imposing. There are not many sexy names or perennial NBA All-Stars, but in fantasy just as it is in reality, sometimes a team with a star or two surrounded by the right role players can be far more more deadly than a collection of big names. Eight weeks in and Team SN is now off to a 7-0-1 start in the FLuD Watches “Barksdale & Bell” fantasy basketball league. We don’t always win big and we don’t always win pretty, but we have the balance to take you out in any category in any given week. Last week, Karmaloop was the victim of a 6-3 SN win and now, we turn our attention to the Week 9 matchup with the basketball minds over at SLAM. Check out some pics of the current roster and stay tuned for more updates as we look to continue on our winning ways this week.
TEAM SNEAKERNEWS WEEK 7 MVP
David West – Amar’e gets a break this week as D-West steals the spotlight with a stretch of solid numbers. West was just shy of a double-double average with 23 points and 9.5 boards along with 3.3 assists and a steal per game over the last 7 days.

As we’ve seen a couple times over the last week, New York’s Madison Square Garden tends to bring out the absolute best in visiting superstars. Michael Jordan was a notably successful cameo player at the basketball Mecca, with more MSG highlights over his career than we could fit in a reasonably-sized post. One significant (if ‘meaningless’) moment came in the 1998 NBA All Star Game where MJ racked up the MVP award and nearly a triple-double en route to an easy East win. Were that year like most others he probably would have rocked the Flints with the Eastern Conference’s blue unis, but with the MLB-style uniforms in effect, MJ broke out the Air Jordan XIII ‘Playoffs’. These might be the single most hotly anticipated release for Spring 2011 and look to be a perfect replica of the original. Click through to get a better look at January’s biggest drop from in52 and avoid the midwinter rush by grabbing a pair early on eBay.

The sneaker game today has allowed for the emergence of nationwide chain retailers as primary spots for sneaker pick-ups. With that said, it is an undeniable truth that the sub-culture had been cultivated by mom-and-pops, local neighborhood spots, and diamonds in the rough that are tucked away in the rarely-explored corners of town. Inside The Sneaker Box and stumbled upon one particular gem – with a name and location they understandably refuse to disclose – and what they found inside was a seemingly untapped oil well so sweet that it’s almost felonious. During ITSB’s trip to what they call “Sneaker Heaven”, they exhibited a display of original Air Jordans and Air Maxes, Converse React Juice and other jaw-dropping kicks, with a stock-room full of old-school gems from L.A. Gear and Reebok as well as a surplus of stock of GR Nikes that people would pay top dollar for today. Check out Inside The Sneaker Box’s heavenly experience after the jump and let us know if you’ve got some hidden gems in your area!
