“A lot of stuff goes in there and we stripped all that out.”
How else could you make a shoe from nothing but scraps from post-consumer plastics? New Balance‘s Design Lead for Wellness, Drew Spieth spoke those words with regard to the brand’s newSKY design initiative that creates the materials for the upper of models like the New Balance Minimus out of used plastic bottles. This new material isn’t like traditional fabrics so extraneous elements could be eliminated from the sleek, lightweight package, further reducing material usage. Spieth concluded that “At the end of the day, it looks like an interesting shoe and also looks great on the foot,” and you can determine the former by clicking through to see more from newSKY and stick with Sneaker News for word on the US release dates.

What a great week it was for the world of sneakers. Summer-time basketball is at its peak right now thanks to the slightly cooler temperatures, and luckily this week was rife with a ton of new Nike Basketball colorways and models. We’ll start with the sick Hyperfuse 2011 Run With/Run From pack, which was limited to just 33 units. The Zoom KD IV made an appearance when Durant wore them while working out with Joe Johnson. LeBron James made headlines with his week-long tour in China, and Kobe Bryant, who has been causing a stir with his game-winning shots, still has a few new colorways of his Kobe VI popping up. On the Air Jordan side of things, we got a look at some Air Jordan 2011 iD samples, another peek at the Dave White x Air Jordan 1, and even a sick collection of autographed Air Jordans. Also, one of the biggest topics of the week was easily the Nike Zoom Rookie and the Memphis Express and Binary Blue colorways.
One of the most impressive Nike topics of the week wasn’t even about a sneaker! Sneaker News showed you the Nike Air Hangar, designed by TVA architects. Collaborations also caused a buzz; we got a look at next Packer Shoes x Reebok Grand Slam colorway, UNDFTD and Converse wowed us with the White Pack, and Todd Bratrud’s got another SB Dunk High in the works. If you’ve got a thing for older gems, Sneaker News provided some impressive features on a Nike Basketball catalog from 1990, which featured Michael Jordan and the Air Jordan V. Finally, the last Battle Of The Customs was made public, as we selected twelve of the best remaining sneaker customs for vote – one of which was the Foamposite Camo that debuted this week. There’s a lot more to see so take a look below and check out this week’s Sneaker News Weekly Rewind!

Some sneakerheads view sneakers as a mode of personal expression. Just as one could tattoo his/her body with permanent ink, another can rock a pair of sneakers and communicate words with through footwear. Sneakers like the Air Jordan XI, adidas Superstar, and Reebok Pump do more than provide cushioning – they assist in creating a sense of style and attitude that few other pieces of apparel can. Dave White, who rose to prominence in the sneaker sub-culture with his signature style of painting, was selected to re-imagine the Air Jordan 1 for the Jordan Brand WINGS For The Future program, and through the finished product we could interpret the message of his design clearly. It was one of history, inner and outer beauty, and iconoclastic agendas – a message that Jordan Brand itself carried through its 25+ years of existence.
This September, fans of the Air Jordan 1 and Dave White‘s brush strokes will be fortunate enough to experience a second Air Jordan 1 designed by the world-renown artist. This time around, he focuses more on Jordan Brand themes, like the classic Black/Red/White Chicago Bulls banner and elephant print, making for shoe all the more relatable to the Air Jordan loyalist. While the release information for this Air Jordan 1 hasn’t been confirmed, these will in fact release to the public (and not limited to 23 pairs via auction). Continue reading for more exclusive images of the Dave White x Air Jordan 1 and stick with Sneaker News for more information as it develops.

Kudos to any of our readers who were actually around to remember when the Air Jordan line was just turning five years old way back in 1990. If not that’s OK too, as the handful of retro releases since then of the Air Jordan V Retro in Black/Metallic silver have helped this killer colorway permeate through the world of sneakers for over twenty years now. And you’re on the verge of getting a chance of snapping up a pair for yourself, with this Air Jordan V retro hitting shelves tomorrow, Saturday the 20th of August. OG colorways usually don’t last long so make sure you’ve got a plan for this one. Hit the jump for a better look and remember to cop these tomorrow at Jordan Brand retailers like Primitive or pick up a pair now on eBay.

While most of you are probably already up on that other big sneaker release going down this weekend, we have something here for those that are more interested in the contemporary side of things. The Nike Zoom KD III ‘Scoring Title’ is dropping tomorrow, a special colorway to commemorate OKC’s big man Kevin Durant locking down another scoring title this year with an average of 27.2 points per game. Following his tour of China back in July, Asian retailers got the first crack at these, but they are making their way stateside as of this weekend. They will be available exclusively at NikeTown retail spots, specifically in New York City, Chicago, and Las Vegas. Hit the jump for a better look at this release from Nike Basketball and if you can’t make it to one of the aforementioned spots grab one of the few available pairs on eBay.

While heads from the Washington DC area like to lay claim to being the first region to really rep the various Foamposite sneakers, the rest of the world has caught up in the past few years due to Nike’s increased focus on this futuristic material. With that being said the latest in the line, the Nike Zoom Rookie shown here in Binary Blue/Black, is posit-ively gorgeous. The aforementioned Binary Blue is a few shades off from the go-to colors for Penny models, landing somewhere between Varsity Royal and Eggplant. And while this is a hybrid model, the successes of previous models in the Air Penny line are remain: carbon fiber plating, icy soles, half-cent logo. Hit the jump for a better look and if you are itching to reserve a pair now they can be had at RMK.

For a chunky soled, ruggedized winter-ready boot, the Nike ACG Lava Dunk High sure is a versatile design. We just saw two Vintage Lava Dunks hit retailers in clean tonal suede and textile colorways with a single accent shade, and though the upper blocking on this new duo is consistent with the classic BTTYS style, they’re anything but traditional. One pair applies orange leather to a black woven nylon base, the other flipping the script for black leather over lime nylon which gives both the quintessential All Conditions Gear look. Click through to see more angles of both pairs and look for these at Nike Sportswear dealers soon; Hong Kong’s Kix-files just got theirs.

The culture of Nike Sportswear has permeated all types of sports. From games that are popular world-wide (soccer, basketball) to those that have stronger followings in select regions (rugby), NSW’s reach has resulted in some great footwear and apparel collections that embody the sport and its accompanying style and tradition. To commemorate the Rugby World Cup in September, Nike Sportswear fashioned these two great colorways of the Nike Zoom Supreme Court Low; you have the option of choosing white leather or black, with both pairs boasting fine details like the Rugby lace dubrae and luxurious leather insoles. These are slated for a release on August 26th, but Kix-Files has them a bit early, so check out the images below and let us know hat you think of the Rugby WC Pack.

Supra continues to add to their summer of packs, this newest trio adorned in an all-over print of the symbol that most concisely represents the addition. The Supra Plus Pack applies white crosses to the navy blue canvas uppers of the Supra Cuttler, Assault and Belay. Like pretty much all of the crown brand’s releases of late, these are unified in their use of a white vulc sole, and all of them are available now at select Supra stockists. Click through to see some more images and let us know how these compare to the plethora of packs we’ve seen from Supra this summer.

The last two Nike SB Blazer Lows we’ve shown you here on Sneaker News have both been done in green suede, one new release and one preview. Joining the teased pair as part of Swoosh Skateboarding’s Q1 2012 footwear catalog is this new edition with grey suede on its upper instead of green, which adds a purple leather Swoosh to the side panels for a look that’s all at once versatile and eye-catching. Click through to see more angles on this upcoming Blazer Low SB for spring ’12 and stick with Sneaker News for updates on these and all Nike SB release dates. via N-SB
