Made for Skate. It’s a brand that has a single meaning if you’re aware of the 2009 skateboarding retrospective book and exhibition by the same name, though it appears the creators themselves have realized there’s a bit of ambiguity with which they can play. Let’s take a closer look at the Made for Skate x Nike SB Dunk Low ‘Rollerderby’, a collaborative design that takes its inspiration not from the period just before Nike SB existed (as in the case of the recent ‘Plum’ Dunk High SB), but from the period before real skateboards were even invented! It’s back in 1959 where you’ll find a board so primitive that it has no concavity or kicktails, not even so much as a hint of griptape, and this mid-century milestone lends its familiar style to one of the more interesting SB Dunks of 2011.
