Any sneakerhead worth his salt is by now familiar with the original Nike Air Max 95 and its signature white-grey-black gradient, but have you noticed some of the other more popular blocking patterns in recent months? You still get plenty of reverse grey-dients and the occasional totally novel approach, but one pattern that’s become more popular is applying a tonal look with a single tier adding some kind of one-degree contrast. It can be a darker suede hue on one tier as was the case with the ‘Shades of Brown’ edition, or a sharp change in gloss as is the case with this new Obsidian release. They’re blocked just like the black/Iguana joints that, just like this pair, are exclusive to England’s JD Sports. Nike SB’s goal in creating the V-Rod was to combine the aesthetics of Paul Rodriguez’ signature line with the long running tradition of vulc-soled plimsolls in the skateboarding world. Needless to say, the blend was a great success, and now the Nike SB Vulc Rod has become one of Swoosh Skateboarding’s standby models for 2011. This latest edition is cast in a colorway Paul himself might have seen at the Rose Bowl a mere half-hour from his hometown of Tarzana, CA, where the Michigan Wolverines would have worn something similar at the end of their best seasons. The best part about this Liberty Blue shade of navy, though, is that it’s sufficiently neutral so as to avoid a clear ‘homer’ look, so you’ll be able to pair these with a variety of clothing options when you pick them up from a Nike SB shop like Flatspot.

Ranking Nike Air Force 1 Bespokes design is kinda like doing the same with American Idol contestants: the experience is an invitation to express oneself so you inevitably get a few brilliant efforts along plenty of wackjobs you’d have trouble putting in order. So while we can’t conclude that this new AF1 Bespoke by someone named Bright is indeed the ultimate in insanity, they do clearly belong in the outlandish pile thanks to a bright yellow lizard skin upper held together with Kaws-like ‘X’ stitching. These even go a step further into what the great beast may have most recently eaten, hints of zebra peeking out from the Swoosh underlay and fuzzy sockliner. Arguably second only to the on-again/off-again saga that is the Entourage ‘Lights Out’ edition, the Nike SB Dunk pictured above has garnered quite a bit of attention since we previewed them in detail late last month. The ’Tauntaun’ Dunk High SB was designed by Nike SB’s Shawn Bavaretto to resemble the t-rex-like Hoth beasts from Empire, but longtime Swoosh Skateboarding heads have remarked that they resemble Quasimoto’s Stones Throw 10th Anniversary F&F collaboration. That seems even more accurate a comparison in light of the changes reflected by these latest images, a new colorblocking scheme leaving these feeling like the ice-coldest BTTYS design ever seen. The texture of a denim or some similar material is apparent on the overlay with suede in a marbled finish below; is this new distribution better than the original images or do you wish they’d stuck with the samples? Of all the Air Max Legacy runners Nike Sportswear releases on the regular, the Nike Air Max 97 seems to be released least frequently. We saw several Air Max 97 VT colorways previewed but a different pari in black leather is the only one to hit retail so far, so that leaves at least three others along with the upcoming CVS edition squarely aimed at the casual sneakerhead looking for a bit of extra comfort. That same consumer will find these new AM97s equally satisfying their nubuck mudguard and red midsole/airbag a novel combination for this runner that’s been out nearly a decade and a half. Nike Sportswear has had some memorable collaborations in recent years with companies like Maharam and Liberty of London that are world renown for their signature fabrics, and now here’s something similar with an Off the Wall twist. The Knoll Textiles x Vans Vault Buffalo Boot is now the third collaboration between the world’s top skate brand and the workplace furnisher, these new drops utilzing a similar material blocking pattern we’d seen on earlier releases. It’s all about texture with these, perforated suede giving way to a grainy material that resembles waxed canvas allowing for some nice tonal depth on the navy and grey designs. After quite a while of remaining in the shadows, the adidas Originals ZX 750 has quietly started to gain some momentum in 2011. A couple new colorways hit retailers this spring and the recent Athletes World collaboration had people comparing them to other grey suede standouts like the Berlin 10th Anniversary ZX9000 and the Consortium ‘Tabula Rasa’ drops, and now here’s another neutral take on the design. These chocolate brown ZX750s keep things classy with the unbeatable combination of suede and mesh along with select golden accents that connect them with the colors outside. A great go-to for the fall season, these ZX 750s just hit retailers like England’s Size?.

As New Balance continues to expand its footwear offerings, we’re seeing several new hybrid designs, but you can’t go wrong with the originals. The New Balance M998BR isn’t one of the models we’ve seen ruggedized for trail use, but then again, it’s sufficiently rare that just the good ol’ 998 itself is going to cause stirs among the NB faithful. This ‘Made in USA’ edition showed up during the summer tradeshow circuit as a release expected for the first half of next year, but it looks like you won’t have to wait until 2012 to get these because NB’s fellow New Englanders Concepts in Cambridge, Mass. have just gotten a full-size run in stock.

Around the time of early-November, we typically expect tip-off of the opening games of the NBA Season. That’s far from a reality right now, with no deal set in places between the owners and the players. However, NBA stars have been participating in an un-official tour of exhibition games, with big names like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Paul getting in some minutes. LeBron James has been using these games as a platform to introduce his LeBron 9, as he wore the ‘Cannon’ and the ‘Ohio State’ colorways during the most recent outings. When will he wear the ‘Miami Nights‘? Perhaps during the upcoming world tour? Here’s a look at the Nike Air Foamposite One ‘What The Foam’, which features the space-age Foamposite upper in a wild, flowing mix of multiple Foamposite One and Pro colors from the past. 2011 has already been a strong year for the Foamposite – Royal, Pewter, Electric Green, Neo Lime, Pine Green, Retro Blue – but for the Foamposite fanatic who just can’t decide on one color, these What The Foams (we’ll abbreviate it as WTF) might be just right for you. The sample you see above is clearly a Foamposite One, but the catalog shot below is clearly a Pro, but let’s face it – it’s the funky tie-dye-ish upper that has your eyes glued to the screen. Unlike the Nike SB Dunk Low ‘What The Dunk’, the Foamposite is one solid piece on the upper, but still, most prominent members of the Foam family look to have been represented. So, thoughts?
