LeBron James is kicking off the 2011-12 NBA Season with back-to-back on-court wears of two high-energy colorways of the Nike LeBron 9. He started things off with the ‘Christmas’ on the Sunday, and followed that up with the Nike LeBron 9 ‘Freegums’, which is actually a special release commemorating his birthday, which falls this Friday, December 30th. The Freegums, of course, is especially distinguished for its detailed graphic on the inner lining as well as the tonal print on the Hyperfuse shell upper; it’s a nice home-grown touch to the Nike LeBron, as Freegums is an artist of the local scene in Miami. Other notable kicks from that game included Dwyane Wade’s ‘Home’ colorway of the Jordan Fly Wade 2 and Juwan Howard’s Air Jordan X ‘Chicago’. Check out more shots of LeBron James in action courtesy of Yahoo! and let us know how these compare to previous Nike LeBron ‘Birthday’ releases – or pick up a pair of the Freegums right now on eBay.

With the holiday season coming to a close, we’ve been dishing out a steady stream of previews for what’s in store for the early part of 2012. And as February draws near, you can expect to see a handful of holiday tie-ins dropping on or around February 14th. This Valentines Day sneaker comes in the form of the Big Nike High, an OG basketball sneaker from the Swoosh that was pretty quiet this calender year. Its upcoming return will strike in GS sizes, with a bit more playful approach then also-rumored Valentines Day release the Nike Air Foamposite One ‘Metallic Red’. Nike SB did some interesting things with the Dunk in recent years. After defattening and refattening the tongues on the Lows and flirting with strap removal surgery on the Mids, the Dunk Pro SB got a new sole construction and traction pattern in 2011 along with improvements to the cushioning and overall feel. This past year also saw a marked increase in ‘Un-’ style colorway reduxes, whereby classics from the past decade were reworked and applied to different silo heights. And now somewhere between those appropriations, carryover models like the ‘Griptapes’ and true retro releases comes this new Nike SB Dunk Low that you’d be hard pressed to call anything other than ’Loden’. That’s because they look quite a bit like the 2002 pair by that same name, but Swoosh skateboarding hasn’t gone so far as to officially link them or suggest further tributes. So what say you, Sneaker News reader? Should Nike SB retro some of its beloved classics, should they continue to push the envelope with new themes and references, and which pairs would you be more excited to add to your collection? via N-SB

Kevin Durant made the leap to elite superstardom in just his second NBA season, winning the first of back-to-back scoring titles and leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to their first playoff appearance. The first PPG crown and an impressive performance at the FIBA World Championships during the summer of 2010 put KD on the map as a household name, but it’s arguably only now that his Nike Basketball signature series is getting the kind of attention a bonafide all-world talent like Durant deserves. The Nike Zoom KD IV has become the Durantula’s most popular sig yet thanks to the energetic and unique ‘Nerf’ and ‘Weatherman’ colorups, but don’t forget it was the ‘Creamcicle’ OKC look that first drew our eyes toward the KD series. This new look is something like the opposite of those famously orange colorways, this pair opting for a shiny dark navy upper and keeping the unrhymable color to a few accent hits. These are certainly calmer than the aforementioned ‘name’ releases, but do these images provided by Sneakerbox Clyde catch your eye enough to warrant a purchase when these hit select retailers like Mr. R Sports in Miami?

The Nike Street Gato is starting to pick up steam after a fairly erratic release schedule in its debut year. 2012 looks like we can expect a nice variety of colorways, and following up on our preview of an all-blue suede pair last week, here’s one that opts for an entirely leather construction. The mix of black and dark grey works nicely against Wasp yellow and just a hint of blue on the ‘GATO’ tag, a blocking pattern that we could imagine working beautifully with a huge range of color palettes. This one keeps it relatively simple, belying the complexity of its triangular-textured medial sides, and you’ll see these details in more in additional photos after the jump. via Sneaker Freaker

When the adidas Consortium came back with the ‘Tabula Rasa’ collection, the adidas Originals ZX 500 was one of the models that appeared in the mix repping the powdery white look. While we can all appreciate a clean white sneaker, it’s nice to see that the adidas Originals ZX 500 will be getting a considerable amount more color going forward. The colorway shown here cranks the crayola look up pretty high, with the oceanic tone of blue dripping all over the front end of the sneaker. Throw a bit of red in there too and you have a pair that comes off looking like some 3D glasses you’d get at the movies. Starting with a few pairs of horsehair-accented Air Max 1s last year, Nike Sportswear began a microtrend toward applying spongy silicon crepe soles to some of its standby silhouettes. There are still a couple of Air Royals on the way with this decidedly boot-like bottom, but suprisingly few of the Swoosh’s competitors have chosen to emulate what’s gotta be something of an inevitable source of inspiration, given how many boot design cues are being borrowed these days. So the Reebok Classic Crepe Pack instantly earns a bit of extra oomph thanks to this relative vacuum, these three new two-toned suede colorways taking the blocking in a different direction than the initially previewed pairs. Click through to see these rustic suede colorups, let us know which one is best and stick with Sneaker News for word on the US release date. via Sneaker Freaker

Most of the sneaker world is anxiously awaiting the release of Kanye West’s second signature shoe with Nike, and while that’s not expected to happen until this spring, Mr. West just threw some interesting info our way via his Twitter. Apparently, Kanye is wasting no time going back to the drawing board (literally), as he has reportedly passed on tonight’s dinner so he can focus on sketching concepts for the Nike Air Yeezy 3. With the top-secret Yeezy 2 still pretty well under wraps, don’t expect to hear much on the Air Yeezy 3 anytime soon, but at least we now know that there looks to be a third Yeezy shoe in progress and the thought of working on it is alluring enough to make Kanye miss meals for it. That’s good enough to get us excited. How about you?

This past week included some major events – the Christmas Holiday weekend and the release of the Air Jordan XI Concord (a ton of you posted your new Concords on WDYWT). Some of you sported your holiday gift pick-ups, like the trio of the Nike Basketball Christmas 2011 Pack, but there was still a nice list of 20 kicks that made it into this week’s Sneaker News Blogs: Best of WDYWT; the Hyperdunk McFly, a sick duo of Christmas-inspired Nike iDs, some OG Concords, and some Nike Basketball gems from the 90′s made up this great list, so take a look at all 20 below and we’ll see you next year!

The Air Jordan III ‘Oregon Pit Crew’ was one of the six selections of the Sneaker News Readers Choice Poll 2011 in the ‘PE’ category, and is likely the favorite to win the category. Both the Pit Crew and the Home White colorway are the truest definition of Player Exclusive, as the Pit Crew Black colorway was released via raffle just for students, and the White pair were made for student athletes, former student athletes, and friends and family. Here we have a nice detailed look at the ‘Home’ colorway, which features a familiar color profile with a Oregon-specific hunter green on the outsole and the ‘O’ logo on the tongue. The colorway is similar to the 2006 release of the Air Jordan XIV White/Green, which has us wondering if an Air Jordan III in a non-PE colorway of White/Green/Black would be popular. What are your thoughts? We’ve got a nice detailed viewing of one of the best Air Jordan III Player Exclusives of all-time below so take a gander and chime in. Many thanks to Jack.
