They’re on entirely different ends of the spectrum when it comes to their connection to basketball sneakers, but both NBA Commissioner David Stern and flamboyant fashion designer Jeremy Scott have come under fire of late for expressing what some have criticized as crass and insensitive. In Stern’s case, the issue was a thought experiment that despite its intended context touched on a nerve; did J.Scott do the same with the shackle on his now nixed adidas Originals Roundhouse Mid ‘Handcuff’? Three Stripes asserts the ‘Handcuff’ “Is nothing more than the designer Jeremy Scott’s outrageous and unique take on fashion and has nothing to do with slavery,” but the potential blowback is enough to take a stand here and now before the latest elaborate ObyO design arrived at retail.
It’s ironic that a shoe that garnered only a moderate buzz in its earliest previews (not to mention that the first comment here on Sneaker News in reference to this topic only came after the cancellation story broke) will now become immortal like the other sneakers stopped short of store shelves; but what happens to the Jeremy Scott x adidas Originals collaboration from here?
