As we head into the winter months, we’re seeing a surge of ripstop nylon applications, this latest drop another in a growing set of skate sneakers borrowing the gridded material most often used on running and trail shoes. The Vans Old Skool has a vague military vibe with these olive and black colorways adding the rugged nylon for which they’re named to the expansive side panels and ankle collars. Suede on the toe suggests some retained skatability, but whether ripstop can handle griptape as well as it conquers mountain trails remains to be seen.
