How Nike’s “Just Do It” Slogan Was Conceived

Just Do It Origin

Nike is responsible for producing the world’s best athletic apparel and footwear, but it’s their intangible product that has pushed the brand into the giant it is to day. Nike has served up uplifting motivation and drive since its earliest days, all of which can be summarized in a phrase that is perhaps as iconic and recognizable as the Swoosh logo itself. Created by long-time creative advertising partner Wieden+Kennedy, the Just Do It statement has encouraged individuals everywhere to take that next step up, but did you know that ‘Just Do It’ has its roots in quite an infamous world event? ‘Just Do It’ was derived from the finals words of a murderer in Utah who was about to undergo his execution by a firing squad. Regardless of the dark cloud that may hang over the genesis of the slogan, ‘Just Do It’ continues to be that proverbial ‘nudge’ for individuals everywhere – for those looking for a sense of empowerment and ability. This video has been out for a while, but it certainly is a great way to spend a few minutes if you’re a Nike history buff. Check it out below, and let us know what you think.
