New York Magazine Examines the Sneaker Reseller Community
Is the average age of folks making money on the sneaker-reselling business going down? If you attend sneaker shows on the regular, or if you find yourself lining up for the latest releases, you just might get that idea. Addressing the younger set of folks flipping kicks is this New York magazine piece, which spins the grind into a rather positive light. Continue reading for a photo recap from their story, head to NY Mag for the full piece, and let us know your thoughts on the current crop of resellers in the comments below.
90% of them are ignorant kids looking for validation. Like if they have the latest Heat other kids will except them. Its a fucking popularity contest, and the result is ridiculously high priced shoes that the other 10% of us aren't willing to pay. Its so damn irritating seeing a sneaker that just released an hour ago already posted for sale, for $100-$200 more than retail. If ur not guna wear the kicks than don't buy them. When you want something else or get tired of wearing something than sell it to someone else for retail or trade for a different pair. This shit shouldn't be about making money. The greed absolutely ruins the culture for us that are apart of it strictly for the love of kicks and the people we meet along the way. I understand that certain sneakers are very limited, and that OGs are hard to come by, so the price should be a little higher, but I'll be dammed if ima pay $300+ for a pair of Retros that just dropped. If everyone just bought one pair, there would be enough to go around. What a lot of ppl fail to realize is that most shoes are pretty abundant, but resellers buy them all up making them harder to buy for the rest of us, and then all these impatient little kids with mommies money pay these ridiculously high prices which in turn fucks it up for the rest. Say no to Rape people!
For me, I think these resellers are both good in a way and also bad in a way. Good is that if you can't attend the retail release date, you can always pay up a little extra and get it from the resellers. Resellers are always there for you if you want a shoe that's already out of the retail. The bad starts when the resellers take all the chances of getting a pair on a release date and then reselling it for a sky-high and an unreasonable price. I don't mind coughing an extra 50 bucks to the resellers for a pair that I couldn't line up for. But if the resellers are gonna cop all the sneakers on the release date and put up a price that's almost impossible to buy, then that is a problem. And as for these young kids to become resellers and to go out and hustle for shoes, I think that's kind of a problem. I think resellers should be people who are atleast in their mid 20's with an actual stable job, and have reselling as a side. Kids their age should use their time wisely and do well in school instead of wasting their time to line up for shoes and profit.
I have no problem with resellers. If you can't get the shoe then you always know someone will have it. Nike should not make more pairs for everyone. I don't want a shoe that everyone else has. That is why we are so addicted to buying shoes. We want to stand out. Nothing worse than going somewhere and everyone has the same pair. I would rather these kids selling shoes legit than selling drugs. It is business. If I want retail I try to get retail. If not then I pay whatever the market calls for. The only people how complain are the same people who complain that their boss does not pay them enough money. I make my own path and these kids are doing the same.
They're alright to an extent because they allow to me pick up a release I might have not been able to get... but at the same time, I might have missed out because OF THE FUCKING RESELLER. Death to all resellers.
NIKE AND JORDAN BRAND JUST PRODUCE MORE SHOES. WE GET OUR SHOES FOR RETAIL AND YOU GUYS GET MORE MONEY!! EVERYBODY HAPPY (PETER GRIFFIN VOICE)
Resellers?? These just look like corny ass kids who i know for sure never even got to see jordan in a bulls uni! They all like 13-17 and if they did they were like 2yrs old! But that just goes to show u how rap influences these young minds. It is what it is, resellers are part of the game now, like it or not they're like rats in a food chain! I wish rats didnt exist but they're a crucial part of te food chain and without em it would be a different game. My beef with resellers is that they wanna make 150$ off every shoe. Learn ur stuff first! I aint opposed to a kid hustlin! Beats them sellin drugs, although these corny ass kids dont hae the stomach for that! Let em make their nickel and dimes. Its them 19 and up resellers who should just get a real job!
It's about supply and demand if I can't get it when it comes out life stills goes on no one is forcing anyone to cop the latest sneaker that seems to come out week after week I'm not knocking the hustle they are just capitizing on the demand for the hottest sneak I'm one of the few who doesn't need to keep up with the latest and greatest release been there and done that
tons of quotes out of context in this article...glad they attended, but the story they decided to formulate seemed very misguided.
What should be done is nike/jordan should just make an xtra 200000 pair of shoes so the resellers get stuck ....reason bieng if shoes are still in the store ppl wont buy off the reseller they wont make any money until the shoe is really sold out and by then everyone got the pair they wanted and the reseller gets stuck with the shoe like the foamposite fighter jet u can still purchase them on line for retail and some footlockers still gotem which fucked it up for those who bought multiple pairs to resell ah ha reseller hope this happends with future releases lol and i hope someone in nike reads this and follows through..............and i am a sneaker head i wear i have not one pair of ds kicks all worn.......
Damn these kids should just go out and have fun with their friends, play video games or sports, talk to girls; stuff kids their age do. And like @JuiceMontana said, where are they getting the money for this?
You know my real beef with re sellers is though? It's not that they're getting shoes, making money, or anything. They're playing the game and that's whatever for them. The problem is that it's bad for the economy. The behavior they're exhibiting is rent seeking, as the resellers get money, but the buyers don't get anything that they couldn't have already bought had the resellers not already bought the shoes. This is different from, say, sites that sell shoes online that are exclusive to one region. They're providing something that you couldn't get no matter what. So as long as these resellers are just selling shoes in their own region that people could have bought otherwise, they're making the economy as a whole poorer. Plus, you're having a whole group of people dedicate their lives to seling shoes, something that, like the actor in the article said, will eventually pop. It's beanie babies all over again.
And lmao at the moms with their capri suns. Kids man, fucking stupid.
Theres a few problems i have with resellers. For one you take away from the real sneaker fans that actually have love for the shoe...the style....and knows the history from growing up as kids. Second if you gonna resell they need to pay a fee to whatever company they are selling the shoe from. Cuz theres no reason that if a sneaker is 160, you hike the price up to 450-500 and profit from all that. Im sorry. I disagree. Lastly you need to be a certain age to resell cuz these look like high school kids buyin kicks for the trend and using it as a get rich quick scheme. Theres alot more things i can ramble about but these are the obvious.
Fuck these little reseller kids, fuckin up the shoe game. Get a fucking job losers. And the saddest thing is that I guarantee none of these faggots never even saw MJ play. SMFH!!!!
Follow me on twitter @TarHeelsSwag lmaoo
I should open a stand selling pizza rolls, kool aid, and blow pops. Probably stand to make a fortune. lol
The only problem I have with resellers is that they crowd the lines just to buy a shoe to resell they don't care what size they get as long as they get a pair. The few times I've camped out for kicks it was mainly kids some of them were even going in on a pair of shoes to resell and in the morning these kids were getting skipped left and right by grown ups and not even speaking up for themselves
I buy and sell , But I would not buy or sell any of the crappy shoes these dudes are holding..... Look at what they got , Nothing really fresh or pimpin...
Ok here's my 2 cents if you do not like resellers then do not buy their shoes plain and simple. There is nothing wrong with trying to make a little extra money in middle school or high school. So stop hating on these young guys especially if you're a grown ass man. The only reseller i'd see as stupid is someone 18 and older because you should have a job by then. So moral of the story is kids will always look for a way to make money in school they just happen to do it with sneakers.
I mean do your thing young bulls my question just is where are they getting the money for some of these kicks lol.
Man please. I have no problem with these dudes. If people are stupid enough to pay them then why not capitalize? People keep hollering "shoe game fucked up" but keep paying these lame ass little kids. If you weren't paying them, they wouldn't exist. If I miss a pair then it's on to the next one.
Dammmmnn! In the late 80's and 90's the sneaker community in NY appeared (at least in my eyes) to be predominantly Black (African-Americans) and Brown (Latinos). Today it seems the culture or purchasing power has shifted towards Caucasians and Asians. Interesting!
Youngins these days. Been an 80s baby, a young kid in the 90s, copping a pair of Jays was a privilege, an honor to his Airness. back in the 90s I had a summer job, save the money to cop a pair of Jays to start school fresh. I have nothing against resellers no matter the age, but i won't support them, specially with the price they put on kicks lol.
Looking at all these defenseless, rich, had everything handed to me kids with these expensive shoes looks like a problem in its self. Robberies might occur more with these reseller. Fucked up thing is I support it.
All these comments make it really easy to see whos a reseller and whos a person that actually appreciates the shoes
That little kid on the last image is way too young... Really shows how diverse the age of sneaker resellers is..
Did anybody notice that little Whiteboy w/DB3's on his right foot, and DB6's on his left?....lol....right on Whiteboy, Rock that Heat! Lol
@wcwktb But we live in a society of capitalism. Buy low, sell high. I don't care what business you are in, this will always be true. Hustling shoes is teaching kids to hustle. They are paying market price. They are not even getting the shoe at wholesale price. It is supply and demand. Every business does this. Nike is doing it to all of us. They make a limited number of shoes. Why? Because they don't need them to sit on the shelves. They need to move product. I agree with them going to school and getting an education but I also think that business itself is a lesson. When I was growing up I wish I could have sold sneakers at their age cause I sure would have done it.
@ozzyyooo Not really. If Jordan makes every shoe a GR, everybody will just be waiting for it to be on sale. If this theory is true that they should just make a lot of pairs of every shoes, then why don't those who miss out on the limited release settle for all the GR's and stop complaining or cursing the resellers? I don't want to rock a pair and then see 3 other guys rocking the same pair at the same place where i'm at.
True but the rats could be eradicated from the game if sneaker companies just produced more shoes in more places. I really don't understand it. Obviously ppl will buy them so why not make more and sell more. Bigger profits. But I guess the big companies really do like the hype and press
@JulianScott i see plenty of black and asian kids photographed as well. It sounds like the article was more about age than race, so it may not be the best place to look for a racial conspiracy.
i have the impression that Nike/JB like resellers... 1. guarantees sell outs 2. if customers are paying twice as much for their shoe by a reseller, than that's 2 pairs that a customer is not buying from their competitors. 3. (elusion of value and & limits) if Nike/JB made larger guantitives of shoes than it would NOT be a big deal to have their product.. "keep it limited and feed into the consumer's mind that; (i'm one of the few that owns this particular 'heat')" and on a side note i like resellers as well, i buy shoes that i like and not for any other reason.. $ gets tight after paying on both car notes, child expenses, rent, bills and going out time to time with the wife. i miss a release or 2 when they come out... i dont sweat it tho cause i know there is a reseller out there who DIDNT wear the shoe and i just gotta pay a lil' more for the shoe that i truly want anyways.
@Newbornfeethead Bike has been restocking certain shoes on their website. Finishline restocked all the Retro's that came out just recently on their website as well. I think Nike is seeing what's going on but they aren't acting quick enough...
lmao at the beanie baby reference haha
@Foots230 man charge it to the game, but what i can say it very unfair is when sneaker sellers make deals with local sneaker store employees and walk out with basically the whole stock of a release, now thats totally unfair i saw that about 2weeks ago. But i purchase AAAALL my sneakers online, so i dont have to worry, i do that only cause i dont do the camping thing and i dont like when ppl try a shoe im gonna buy, its like wearing someone underwear to me like wtf... AND AS FAR AS A GET RICH QUICK SCHEME dont forget the economy sucks and parents cant afford to buy their kids J's let the lil dudes hustle, after all their jus kids, if it wasnt this its PS games etc
@DreamChaser Their parents are out of camera sight holding their juice boxes
@Memphislee69 well u one of the dam ppl the mees it up for the person that wants to wear the sneaker they call ppl like u a scavenger/ line troll get a life.....
@boodle81 keep your 2 cents my g and put it up for your next pair of kicks keep your 2 cent in mind for the next time u really want a sneaker and u cant buy it in a store cause of the reseller what ever age dosent matter niggas is fucking up the foot game smh
@Gusto I'm from Russia, and many can only be obtained through these ghouls but the hard overprays it certainly is not cool
Im young but still my exact opinion if I don't get a sneaker before I leave the store Im like what ya getting next weekend
@Cop em and Rock em Race shouldn't be put into consideration in my opinion. But anyone wearing like that is pretty wack..
@newsouth912 the exclusivity is a major contributing factor to how well a sneaker sells. It's in our DNA as humans; if something is exclusive, people will want it. I'm not trying to preach/evangelize here (I'm as far from religious as you can get), but examples of this are seen in the story of Adam and Eve; they had all the food they could eat, but they wanted the fruit from the forbidden tree. A little different, but the same principle.
