Nike separates their heritage of football boots (Or “soccer sneakers” for the Yankees) into two eras: the post and pre Mercurial ones. These new Nike Air Max 1 styles pay tribute to the latter with a range of colorways referencing specific points in Nike Mercurial history, and the pairs actually use some of the same tech type materials as this year’s Nike Mercurial boot to make the homage complete. Continue reading to get familiar with each of them and then tell us in the comments which of these Nike Air Max 1 FB pairs, releasing on April 12th, you’re feeling the most.

nike air max history Nike Details the History of Air Max Sneakers

The Nike Air technology was one that had been floating around in Nike’s sole kits for years before the Air Max tooling made its debut. The brand knew that they had a cushioning platform superior to their competitors, but they just needed a way to show it off. You know the story from there: Tinker Hatfield visited the Georges Pompidou center in Paris and his revelation started a revolution. Wieden+Kennedy showed off the sneakers in the controversial “Revolution” spot and the blazing bright red sneakers started to show up on the feet of runners around the world.

Nike Celebrates “Air Max Day”

March 17th, 2014 by | 8 comments

nike air max day summary Nike Celebrates Air Max Day

The Nike Air Max 1 changed the sneaker world forever when it debuted back on March 26th, 1987. This year, Nike is making an official holiday out of that day with the release of the Nike Air Max 1 “Air Max Day”, a reprisal of the original white/sport red flavor of the Tinker Hatfield silhouette that first showed the world visible Air. That release, which features a unique 3/26 tongue tag and some of the more yellowed faux-vintage soles we’ve ever seen, actually just came and went as a special pre-order on Nikestore. But the celebration doesn’t stop there.

If all the Nike Air Max 1 FB is to you is a pack of Maxes surrounding last year’s ‘Yeezy’ colorway, you’re missing the point. Yes, there’s some overlap in Nike Sportswear’s Futbol series and the Kanye West signature line that just blew up, but that has more to do with great minds thinking alike than any direct association. Take for instance this latest Air Max 1 FB, done in silver and Volt. This colorway doesn’t connect to any Air Yeezys, released or samples, the Mercurial Vapor IX that gave birth to the memorable ‘Mambacurial’ Kobe 8 or any other current soccer boot. These reach all the way back to 2002 for the first Mercurial Vapor cleats as worn by Ronaldo en route to the 2002 World Cup title. Check out more images after the jump and stick with Sneaker News for updates on these and all the footy footwear building up to the 2014 event this summer.

Ready for another round of Nike Air Max 1 FBs? These colorways inspired by football boots take a different route than the first pairs, the leopard suede joints or the elegant (patent) leather makeups, the pair above taking on the dimpled appearance of the Mercurial Vapor IX. This along with the Neo Lime upper and Total Crimson Swooshes, white midsole and icey outsole gives these a high energy appeal even without the addition of a fast-looking forefoot Swoosh. On March 26th, Nike changed the game. The launch of the Air Max 1 by Tinker Hatfield began a legacy of footwear that not only redefined conventional methods of footwear cushioning, but elevated the brand above others that were putting out their own respectable efforts in sneaker technology. On the same date this year, it looks like Nike will pay homage to the original Air with a special version of the OG “Sport Red” joints; featuring the “3.26″ tag on the tongue and a yellowed vintage-style sole, this Air Max 1 will refresh the silhouette for yet another year of dominance in Retro kicks. Stay tuned for more and we’ll keep you updated.
