At one point just a pack among a variety of more stylized releases from Nike Sportswear, the Vintage edition has become the core of the Blazer catalog. This new Nike Blazer Mid Suede VNTG is an effort befitting the tradition, a slightly dusty Obsidian design with a darker shade on the laces and lighter on the Deep Royal Swooshes. They’ll have some serious competition with the YOTS-themed snake Swoosh releases just around the corner, but there’s no doubting this will be among the more successful VNTG Blazers now that it’s available at stores like End.

Nike Sportswear’s Mid and High designations often leave us wondering which Blazer is which, but when it comes to the Action Sports division, there’s no doubt. The Nike Blazer Mid LR has a distinctive cut that merges the Swoosh’s first basketball design with the high ankle/low heel styles we’ve seen on recent Hyperdunks and Hyperfuses, and of course, the KD V. These also stand alone among the Blazer lineage with their use of LunarLon cushioning, but the style on this Strata Grey and Metallic Cool Grey edition is the same low-key elegance we’ve come to expect. While the rest of the world plays with animal prints and bright colors, Nike Sportswear offers plenty of their own, in addition to a wholly unique thread running through the spring catalog. Like the Dunk High before it, the Nike Blazer Mid Woven takes a classic basketball design and reinvents it with the kind of upper construction we’re more used to seeing on the Footscape and other iconoclastic lifestyle designs. We just saw a ‘Woven’ Blazer Mid for women this week, and while that half-and-half approach gave a more colorful result, it’s this trio that more truly manifests the woven approach thanks to 90%+ nylon ribbons. Not every new Vintage Blazer Mid features snakeskin or some other wild print. Nike Sportswear keeps things a bit closer to the origin of this pre-yellowed take on the original Beaverton basketballer, revisiting the tried and true suede upper, leather Swoosh and an off-white shade we’d wager turns out to be Sail on the tongue, sole and lining. The Nike Blazer Mid Suede VNTG does try a couple of subtle new things here, though. The suede heel tab is a rarity, and being its pairing with the upper in such a monochromatic combination proves there are still a million and one more ways to keep the Blazer classy. It’s a reasonable expectation with the past few years’ output that the Air Force 1 will take the lead for Nike Sportswear’s latest Lunar New Year collection. But along with the AF1, other beloved classics like the Air Max 90 and Nike Blazer Mid are joining the Year of the Snake celebration. This YOTS Blazer Mid is depicted more clearly in these new images, which show us how sharp the delineation between black and Court Purple actually is on this upcoming design. Expect a proper debut in early 2013 along with more Chinese New Year Nikes, but you can already get select sizes today from Kicks-crew.

A simple thought experiment to gauge either your longterm memory, sneakerhead experience, changes in Lunar New Year sneaker output or some of each: how would you compare the Year of the Dragon to the Year of the Ox? Only three years separate them on the Chinese zodiac, but Nike’s gradual expansion has followed by other brands and now in 2012 with snake such a natural footwear expression, we’re reaching a new peak. A classic silhouette we’d seen in Tiger and Ox form but was conspicuously silent during the Rabbit and Dragon years, the Nike Blazer High has another scaled edition on the way for 2013. Adding to the snake Swooshed VNTG 77s on the way, this YOTS Blazer High has a Toronto Raptors lean, but makes its intentions clear with a distinctive heel badge in place of the traditional un-italicized OG logo. The Blazer is enjoying its new action sports-oriented midcut variation with the LunarLon cushion. It’s also thriving in low-key earth tones, khaki to be more specific. Following up on October’s Dark Khaki and Filbert edition comes this new Nike Blazer Mid LR in (not Dark) Khaki suede, along with a textured black Swoosh. As with the first Hybred release we saw this week, these new Blazer LRs go with a refreshed tongue tag echoing the box branding, so have a closer look at them after the jump, then find yours at retailers like Premier.
