The Deep Emerald shade that has in recent years been renamed as Freshwater is the color most strongly associated with Ken Griffey Jr.’s Nike Training signature series. This teal hue reminds us that the Seattle Mariners were among a select few groundbreaking sports franchises to bring us tertiary colors in the early ’90s, but even as the marquee look for the whole Griffey family, the Freshwater look has some serious competition. The pairing of Soar and Cyber on this Nike Air Max Griffey Fury is reminiscent of the first non-OG Air Griffey Max 1 that released back in 2009, a colorway that has its roots in the Total Griffey Max 99 that released a decade prior. These have the youthful exuberance to stand out during the summer along with the lightweight and breathable benefits of a Hyperfuse upper, and they’re available now from NikeStore.

Under-the-radar releases like the Total Griffey Max ’99 have been forced in one way or another to take a backseat to the major high-profile releases like the Air Jordan Retros and Foamposites, but that doesn’t mean those underrated releases should be overlooked. The Total Griffey Max ’99 returned in early February and hits us again a month later in this sick Dark Grey/Vivid Orange colorway (just looking at the Swingman logo on the heel has us wondering how sick a LeBron 9 would look in this color-combo). Oneness just stocked these Griffeys so check out the detailed shots below and look out for these at Nike Sportswear retailers soon.

How many times can Ken Griffey Jr. continue to hit them out of the park?! We’re about to start the second season since Junior retired with a fifth* all-time long ball mark of 630 (best since Willy Mays among non-asterisked players), but Nike Sportswear’s commitment to the Kid’s retros and their offspring are making it feel like the middle ’90s again, both in style and frequency of home runs. This latest Nike Air Max Griffey Fury excels effortlessly in a colorway that’s fairly new to this series: an Action Red-accented Old Royal getup that leans toward a Mets vibe in certain lighting. A new Air Max Griffey Fury just hit retailers with Action Green accents, a color borrowed from one of the original styles from a model that’s been just as overlooked as the OG Diamond Fury. The Nike Total Griffey Max ’99 hearkens back to Junior’s last season in Seattle with a playful take on the Mariners’ color scheme that reflects the resurgence of neon in 1998 and into ’99 after the Air Max 95-sparked mid-decade explosion. This nearly forgotten chapter in the Junior canon features a distinctive lateral ‘wave’ that could’ve been right at home on any of Nike Basketball’s releases from that same period, its 5/8 height a change from the earlier Air Griffey Max models and one that’s arguably more wardrobe friendly. Have a closer look after the jump and find yours now at select Nike Sportswear retailers like West NYC.

Sure aqua tones wrapping the ‘Freshwater’ version of this same sneaker may be closer to any jersey that Junior ever suited up in, but it’s a hybrid in the first place so if you’re particular about preserving the OG looks than these probably don’t appeal to you anyway. The rest of us can enjoy the Nike Air Max Griffey Fury in the new action green look shown here, with the grey-dient set up almost ending up look like an Air Max 95 homage. Stay with us after the jump to get the full shots of the Nike Air Max Griffey (as well as a pic of Wale suiting up them), which is available now at Social Status.

No matter how far removed a sneaker like the Nike Air Max Griffey Fury may be removed from the original string of Junior models, it still deserves to don the ‘freshwater’ colorway. We’d say it does a pretty good job of it at that, showing up with some minor tweaks from the sample version we previewed last year. In general the retail version lines up more with previous freshwater releases in the Griffey catalog, with the side Swoosh coming in white and a bit of red detailing outlining the 24 hit on the top end. This particular Nike Air Max Griffey Fury should show up at Nikestore later this month, but some spots like Millennium Shoes already have their pairs on deck. Check out the shots after the jump and let us know if you approve of the final tweaks made to these before they hit the shelves.

Sure LeBron is putting on for the Griffey line with his own ‘Swingman’ release, but for true fans of the man’s footwear legacy a mere logo hit won’t suffice. What will suffice is the retro release of the Nike Total Griffey Max ’99, a pair from the latter half of Junior’s career that grabs the bubbled sole from the Air Max 97 of a few years prior. These are officially hitting tomorrow, February 8th, or probably right at the stroke of midnight EST at your favorite online retailer. Check out the shots of the Nike Total Griffey Max ’99 in black/zen grey/varsity red we’ve got below and grab them now from sneakermaid on eBay if you can’t stand the wait.

Is February the Hottest Month Ever for sneakers? Foot Locker is locked and loaded with all of this month’s sickest releases, like the Air Jordan IV White/Cement, Air Jordan X ‘Old Royal’, the Air Foamposite One ‘Metallic Red’ and much, much more. To kick off this insane month of footwear releases, Foot Locker invited a select group of media to participate in the unveiling of the #HottestMonthEver collection, but before the shoes were presented, a special warm-up even was held on the Madison Square Garden floor! The entire group was split into two squads (one Nike, wearing the LeBron 9 Freegums and Kobe VII ‘Concord’, another adidas, rocking the adiZero Rose 2.0 and 2.5) and faced off with former Knickerbocker legends acting as head coaches for both teams. After two halves of play, a special event space was set up, placing a spotlight on February’s mammoth sneaker drops. We’ve got a look at this February’s upcoming releases at Foot Locker below, so don’t forget to join Foot Locker VIP for inside info on kicks and some exclusive deals!
