The Nike Air Griffey Max 360 was already a bit of a head turning sneaker thanks to the 360 Air treatment running along the bottom, a choice that’s been a popular one for the Griffey line during its latest lifecyle. Taking things even further on the head-turning scale is this brand new colorway featuring burnt turquoise and total crimson. The sneaker is actually based on Griffey’s yacht ‘The Chosen One’ and a series in Florida where he opted to room on the yacht instead of with the team. Get the official angles on the Nike Air Griffey Max 360 ‘Yacht/Chosen One’ after the jump then get yours from Nikestore.

The Griffey line has been a little quiet as of late, a silence that is finally being broken by this splashy colorway of the Nike Air Griffey Max 360. The pair has an almost ‘Southbeach’ looking colorway that apparently gets its inspiration from Ken Griffey Jr’s yacht that goes by the name of ‘Chosen One’. More specifically the inspiration comes from an incident wherein Griffey parked his yacht out in Fort Lauderdale during a series against the Marlins and opted to room there instead of in the team hotel. Driving that theme home is the tongue badge on that sneaker featuring a little yacht icon and that very nickname. With the recent blank list of inductees into the 2013 class of the Baseball Hall of Fame, we’re reminded that while many of the next few years’ discussion will be dominated by similar talk, there are indeed a few mortal locks for Cooperstown. One such superstar is Ken Griffey Jr., one of the most beloved and skilled players of his generation and arguably the greatest center fielder since Willie Mays. The Nike Air Griffey Max 360 celebrates his enduring legacy with a new colorup with Cincinnati Reds implications, and you can see them depicted further after the jump before you grab a pair at Nike Sportswear retailers like Oneness.

Arriving early for spring training, the quintessential Ken Griffey Jr. colorway returns on a brand new silhouette sporting some of today’s most advantageous technical specs. Something like a cross-training answer to basketball’s Air Penny V, the Nike Air Griffey Max 360 picks up where earlier tech-updates left off, and just like Hardaway’s signature series, this new Griffey signature seeks to capitalize on a legacy of established design language. Sweeping upper lines have a mixture of curves and angles that offers another representation of Junior’s sweet swing, while Hyperfuse adds both breathability and graphical options to a Nike+ enabled Max Air platform you’ll find available soon at select Nike Sportswear retailers.

Prince Fielder won his second MLB Home Run Derby Monday night, and the only player to do it thrice proved during his dominant 1990s that a sweet swing could surpass the strength of visibly powerful guys like ‘king’ Cecil. Ken Griffey Jr. has enjoyed longevity beyond every power hitter of his generation, and young sneakerheads who never saw him hit a round-tripper know to tip their caps in respect thanks to Nike Sportswear’s revival of his signature crosstrainers. Junior’s resurrection has coincided with Penny Hardaway’s revival, a bigger fanbase for trainers than ever before and new technologies like Hyperfuse and Nike+-equipped 360-degree Max Air soles. All of these factors come together on what’s effectively Griffey’s answer to the Air Penny V, a brand new model that derives its lines from the previous models without borrowing from them explicitly as with the Air Max JR and Diamond Fury hybrids. The Nike Air Griffey Max 360 is a fitting addition to this legacy, a 5/8-cut midtop with sweeping curves as smooth as the Swingman loop that marks their lateral heels. A ‘Fresh Water’ Air Griffey Max 360 joins several other colorways in photos after the jump, so click through to see which one you like best and stick with Sneaker News for release info as we approach the spring 2013 debut. via CK
