Nevermind the groundhog – Opening Day of Major League Baseball marks the start of the Spring season, so to coincide with today’s wide launch of the 2012 season is a look back at one of the rarest and undiscovered Player Exclusives we’ve ever seen. Check out this sick Nike Air Griffey Max 1 Player Exclusive made for Ken Griffey Jr. for the 1996 MLB All-Star Game; at just 26 years of age, Griffey was one of the most (if not the most) feared hitter in the game, earning a multitude of awards and consideration an a yearly basis while making the All-Star Game his summer time-share – he was pretty much guaranteed a spot. This PE, brought to us by Nike sample monger youbetgrish, features the Air Griffey Max 1 in a unique glossy patent leather-like finish – remember it was the Air Jordan XI of that same year that introduced the patent leather to the athletic shoe. Check out the extra angles of this baseball treat and let us know if you want Nike to whip up some more Air Griffey Max 1 colorways! Photos via sole-u

Nike Air Max Griffey Fury – Soar – Cyber

March 20th, 2012 by | 8 comments

The Deep Emerald shade that has in recent years been renamed as Freshwater is the color most strongly associated with Ken Griffey Jr.’s Nike Training signature series. This teal hue reminds us that the Seattle Mariners were among a select few groundbreaking sports franchises to bring us tertiary colors in the early ’90s, but even as the marquee look for the whole Griffey family, the Freshwater look has some serious competition. The pairing of Soar and Cyber on this Nike Air Max Griffey Fury is reminiscent of the first non-OG Air Griffey Max 1 that released back in 2009, a colorway that has its roots in the Total Griffey Max 99 that released a decade prior. These have the youthful exuberance to stand out during the summer along with the lightweight and breathable benefits of a Hyperfuse upper, and they’re available now from NikeStore.

Under-the-radar releases like the Total Griffey Max ’99 have been forced in one way or another to take a backseat to the major high-profile releases like the Air Jordan Retros and Foamposites, but that doesn’t mean those underrated releases should be overlooked. The Total Griffey Max ’99 returned in early February and hits us again a month later in this sick Dark Grey/Vivid Orange colorway (just looking at the Swingman logo on the heel has us wondering how sick a LeBron 9 would look in this color-combo). Oneness just stocked these Griffeys so check out the detailed shots below and look out for these at Nike Sportswear retailers soon.

Nike Air Max Griffey Fury – Old Royal – Action Red

nike air max griffey fury old royal action red 1 570x427 Nike Air Max Griffey Fury Old Royal Action Red

How many times can Ken Griffey Jr. continue to hit them out of the park?!  We’re about to start the second season since Junior retired with a fifth* all-time long ball mark of 630 (best since Willy Mays among non-asterisked players), but Nike Sportswear’s commitment to the Kid’s retros and their offspring are making it feel like the middle ’90s again, both in style and frequency of home runs.  This latest Nike Air Max Griffey Fury excels effortlessly in a colorway that’s fairly new to this series: an Action Red-accented Old Royal getup that leans toward a Mets vibe in certain lighting.  Click through to see more and grab yours at an NSW store like Extra Butter.

Nike Air Max Griffey 99 – White – Neptune Blue – Action Green | Available

WEST NYC GRIFFEY 99 CLOSEUP 570x380 Nike Air Max Griffey 99 White Neptune Blue Action Green | Available

A new Air Max Griffey Fury just hit retailers with Action Green accents, a color borrowed from one of the original styles from a model that’s been just as overlooked as the OG Diamond Fury.  The Nike Total Griffey Max ’99 hearkens back to Junior’s last season in Seattle with a playful take on the Mariners’ color scheme that reflects the resurgence of neon in 1998 and into ’99 after the Air Max 95-sparked mid-decade explosion.  This nearly forgotten chapter in the Junior canon features a distinctive lateral ‘wave’ that could’ve been right at home on any of Nike Basketball’s releases from that same period, its 5/8 height a change from the earlier Air Griffey Max models and one that’s arguably more wardrobe friendly.  Have a closer look after the jump and find yours now at select Nike Sportswear retailers like West NYC.

Nike Air Max Griffey Fury – Black – White – Action Green | Available

Sure aqua tones wrapping the ‘Freshwater’ version of this same sneaker may be closer to any jersey that Junior ever suited up in, but it’s a hybrid in the first place so if you’re particular about preserving the OG looks than these probably don’t appeal to you anyway. The rest of us can enjoy the Nike Air Max Griffey Fury in the new action green look shown here, with the grey-dient set up almost ending up look like an Air Max 95 homage. Stay with us after the jump to get the full shots of the Nike Air Max Griffey (as well as a pic of Wale suiting up them), which is available now at Social Status.
