defining moments hyperdunk Outliving The Hype: Defining Moments of the Nike Hyperdunk Series

The Nike Hyperdunk series has amassed a decorated history since it was first unveiled in 2008. It’s touched the feet of almost every significant Nike Basketball athlete, been used as a platform to unveil some incredible new innovation, and acted as a bridge to connect basketball-crazed countries around the globe. With that said, this prized legacy might have as much historical significance as any other sneaker lineage in the Nike archives, and as it reinvents itself into an all-new iteration in the 2014 model, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t expect the Hyperdunk to be a big player in the culture of the sport of basketball and the accompanying footwear landscape.

The Nike Hyperdunk Supreme “NBA on TNT” is an incredibly rare pair – only 48 were released for the shoe’s Atlanta-only debut back in 2008. The sneakers indeed pay tribute to your favorite Emmy Award-winning basketball analysts by placing the likes of Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, and Ernie Johnson on the tongue via a caricature graphic. This particular pair ends up all the more treasured thanks to the autographs present. That’s right, the owner actually tracked down those three and had them bless the sneakers with their signatures. See more angles on this Hyperdunk rarity after the break and then add them to your collection courtesy of pepboiiz29 on eBay.

The colorway that’s been flaunted the most is that mango orange one, but there will be plenty more coming that will end up a bit more subtle. Case in point is this dark pair, which has an upper that stays pretty much jet black save for that Swoosh that cuts across the side. Triple Threat: A Closer Look at the Nike Hyperdunk 2014

nike hyperdunk 2014 colorways Triple Threat: A Closer Look at the Nike Hyperdunk 2014

In 2008, the Nike Hyperdunk was unveiled and the tech-filled basketball sneaker instantly became a global phenomenon. Six years later, the flagship model still has a firm grasp as the premier non-signature basketball shoe in the world, and this July, the latest phase of evolution will be ready to be tested by the most energetic ballers around the globe. In a special media-only briefing at Niketown NYC, Nike Basketball Product Manager Charles Williams addressed the select group of attendees, emphasizing the technological arsenal of the Hyperdunk 2014 (Hyperfuse, Dynamic Flywire, and Lunarlon), praising the designers (Leo Chang, Eric Avar, and Peter Fogg), and noting that their Big 3 (Kobe, KD, and LeBron) are eternally curious about the sneaker.

The shoe, however, was designed with the do-it-all Paul George in mind, and for a guy who pretty much covers 100% of the court at all times, a do-it-all sneaker like the Hyperdunk is a necessity: Full-length Lunar provides the cushion, Hyperfuse cuts out excess weight, and Dynamic Flywire keeps him locked down as he explodes off the Earth’s surface. The Nike Hyperdunk 2014 will make its official debut at retail on July 16th, so check out the “Bright Mango” launch colorway as well as some NIKEiD samplings below to get better acquainted at the next installment of this honored series.
