New Balance is sending its iconic 574 silhouette down to Johannesburg, South Africa for the release of this new “City of Gold” colorway. The sneakers were created in conjunction with local boutique Shelflife and local artist Dr. Z, both of whom chipped in on the black and yellow sneakers. The pair plays on quite a bite of local legend – referencing the city’s nickname, the Parktown Prawn king cricket, and more. In addition to all the MRL996 pairs with the updated REVlite midsole, the New Balance 996 has been experimenting with some new presentations following its 25th birthday last year.  Early in 2014, we’ve had the ‘National Parks’ pairs show off new blocking configurations and ticked laces, both of which are themes impacting the look of this newest black suede pair.  These joints have a crisp contrast against white mesh but the details that really make this design are the red laces with green and yellow ticks, the golden brown leather ‘N’ and heel tab and that speckled ENCAP wedge at the heel.  Check them out with more photos after the jump, then cop yours from shops like Feature.

The New Balance 998 was already a patriotic sneaker, as the shoe has the coveted “Made in US” build more often than not (The collaborations usually aren’t of the USA persuasion). This time around the shoe goes all out on that front with some red, white, and blue detailing. Sure 4th of July is a little far away, but these still aren’t a bad choice as far as patriotic NBs go if you don’t have access to the likes of the Benjamins from UBIQ or the Kennedys from Concepts. Take another look after the click and then scoop these up from Feature Sneaker Boutique.
