Nike SB Paul Rodriguez Premium – Armory Slate – Black

The Nike SB Paul Rodriguez 7 debuted on Friday, July 5th 2013. The tonal tiger-striped red and black pair is the signature look so far; how does that style translate to other colorways? Quite well, judging by how they tackle this next pairing, which gives us more contrast by way of a different blocking pattern. The way all the lines sweep together in alternating shades makes for a vague resemblance to the long-awaited Air Up retro coming up next year, an observation that reflects the P-Rod line’s success in emerging with original designs from the retro basketball-based SB lineup of Dunks and Blazers. Check out this Armory Slate and black edition in more images below and stick with Sneaker News to see when they hit US skate shops.

Earlier this month Sneaker News and Nike SB signature athlete Paul Rodriguez took some time to chat about his newest pro-model by the Swoosh – the Nike SB Paul Rodriguez 7. For a guy who has been under the Nike label for almost a decade (and boasts one of the longest sig-shoe lineages in the brand’s history), Rodriguez continues to maintain that fresh-faced energy as he thrashes skateparks around the globe. It’s this sort of energy that makes the athlete and the product bearing the name that much more of a draw, but it’s the pure design and function of the shoe that has us impressed. Nike has always captured the essence of the skate shoe while incorporating some next-level technology that other brands are still working to achieve, but the design and detail is what makes the brand the undisputed industry leader.

sneaker news p rod 7 interview P Rod Discusses his Seventh Signature Model, Favorite Afterskate Shoes & Crown Jewel of his Collection

How many Nike athletes can you name that have made it to a seventh signature model? The list isn’t very long and the fact that Paul Rodriguez is about to receive his speaks not only to the prolific dominance of his sport over the span of his Nike tenure, but also his sustained marketability and star power as an athlete endorser. P-Rod came on board in the mid-2000′s just as the Nike SB division was really beginning to explode in popularity and quickly became the face of the brand as the honored recipient of its very first signature model. Since Paul’s arrival way back then, the SB family has made some notable additions along the way, bringing on living legend, Eric Koston and a few others like Stefan Janoski, whose signature shoe has become a contemporary classic since it debuted a few years back. But despite some enticing new names and models, there’s nothing quite like being the first. Much like Michael Jordan’s early shoes came to define the Nike basketball category and what it meant to be a signature athlete, P-Rod will always be “the guy” when it comes to Nike Skateboarding.

With the time tested vulcanized sole and a silhouette combining classic skate lines with modern precision, the Nike SB V-Rod is one of those shoes that could potentially remain in rotation into perpetuity   Perhaps Nike Skateboarding recognizes this, and their response is to dole out Vulc Rods at a moderate pace to facilitate a longterm sustainability.  In any case, this greyed-out V-Rod has the understated good looks you’ll come back to again and again, and it’s available right now at Flatspot.
