We’re in a new age of Nike/NFL tie-ins now that the sportswear giant has the outfitting rights for the league. The five year contract started back in April of 2012 and immediately had an effect on Nike’s sneaker output. Let’s not forget though that the brand has long been committed to the idea of gridiron sneakers. In fact, University of Oregon quarterback Dan Fouts was one of the first athletes Knight and co. got to wear their sneakers outside of their circle of track stars. Back then, pairs like the Nike Astro Grabber with its waffle kit on bottom and the Nike Turfster with its more straightforward cleat design proved as early as 1972 that Nike meant business in the football footwear realm.

Will history be more generous to this Nike Free Trainer 5.0 or the earlier, fingertrap version of the shoes? At some point the identical names will need to be resolved – perhaps people will be arguing on sneaker forums decades from now trying to figure the whole thing out based on shreds of evidence. For the time being though, this pair is definitely taking ownership of the moniker as the aforementioned fingertrap has faded out a bit. The sneakers are again seen in a rather Oregon looking colorway that dons pine green and mixes in some varsity maize. See them in better detail after the click and stay tuned for further info on this Nike Trainer.

Nike CJ Trainer 2 “Spicy Tuna”

May 14th, 2014 by | 5 comments

nike zoom cj 2 tuna roll 01 Nike CJ Trainer 2 Spicy Tuna

Apparently this first up Nike CJ Trainer 2 colorway is inspired by some Japanese food. Instead of going with a team based colorway out of the gate, the pair of Calvin Johnsons has instead gone the food route with this fiery sushi style “Spicy Tuna” combination. Will the sneakers stick with these sort of story telling colorways and make them the main focus, an approach that’s been common over in Nike Basketball as of late? Stick with us for the answers and watch for the Nike CJ Trainer 2 “Spicy Tuna” to launch this week.

nike air trainer ii safari Nike Air Trainer II Safari Tribute to Barry Sanders

The Nike Air Trainer II is the next retro release to pick up on the safari dotting, and this pair even goes further than that with a colorway that’s pretty close to the original black and orange. You’ll notice that they also have some personal detailing in the form of that #21 embroidered towards the heel and the various stat call outs on the insole, all of which link them up to hall of fame and Heisman Trophy running back Barry Sanders. What connection Sanders has to the Safari remains uncertain, but the colorway also just happens to line up with his Oklahoma State alma mater. See more on these safari Nike Air Trainer 2s for Barry Sanders and stick with us for the sneaker release date info on them.

nike zoom cj 81 trainer 2 Nike Zoom CJ Trainer 2

The sequel to Calvin Johnson’s Nike CJ81 is releasing this week. The model is known as the Nike Zoom CJ Trainer 2 and will be debuting in a turf orange/white/poison green combination that will officially launch on Nikestore on May 15th. We’ve not seen anything on the model prior to these pictures, but that sort of makes sense given that Nike wouldn’t want to distract from all the Draft Day drama of last week. See the new Nike Zoom CJ Trainer 2 again after the click and stick with Sneaker News for more on this new pair of football trainers.
