This latest release from Nike Sportswear suggests we’ll see one more after it, as ten months into 2011 this is now the fifth Nike Vandal High we’ve seen here on Sneaker News. Each of ’11s Vandals has been true to its old school roots, and while this pair’s three colors is more than the last two releases utilized, they’re still every bit as classic thanks to the immortal Chicago Bulls colorway not too terribly dissimilar to next month’s highly-anticipated Air Jordan III Retro ‘Black Cement’. Rudy Guliani hasn’t made waves in the early Republican presidential runoff, but he’s gotta be pleased with 2011 because we haven’t seen evidence of very many Vandals. And regardless of your opinion on street art, Nike Sportswear’s relative lack of attention to the Nike Vandal High has left fans of the strappy hightop wondering when and if this model will return to its ’00s heights, NSW now commanding a near-infinite vault of classic models. Luckily, we haven’t been totally without the Vandal’s presence in ’11, and this new black pair reprises the clean material and colorblocking pattern in use on a Dark Grey pair that released in early August. It seems like we’re averaging one new Nike Vandal High colorway a quarter these days, and for a model that used to run alongside the Dunk and Blazer with its frequent new releases, the relative lack these days is quite conspicuous. Even if we’re not going to get into the double-digits in 2011, at least with this new pair, Nike Sportswear managed to nail contemporary trends, as this new Vandal High looks as crisp as any pair we’ve ever seen with its grey leather body giving way to white accents. Once a staple in the Nike Sportswear release calendar, the Nike Vandal High has been AWOL of late. We’ve only seen a single mens release in the last nine months, but at least this one proves that its classic design can keep up with the times. But really, the simple red-on-white getup is something of a throwback itself, so perhaps we should see more Vandals now that the relatively simple styles with which it debuted decades ago has become one of the contemporary defaults. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait almost another year to see another pair this good, and luckily there’s no need to wait with this pair; they’re available now at FinishLine.

You can’t get more old school than canvas uppers and ankle straps, and there isn’t a better shoe that better utilizes those materials than the Nike Vandal High. The Vandal originated twenty-seven years ago and is now a classic Sportswear silhouette thanks to simple colorways and memorable artist collabs (Geoff McFetridge’s ‘Tearaway’ and Tom Luedecke’s ‘Nature’ being two succinct examples). This new release of the Vandal features classic color-blocking of black and varsity royal with a striped ankle-strap and a pure-white midsole. Nike WMNS Vandal High – White – Utility Orange – Metallic Gold

Like any skilled backpacker, the Nike Vandal High has been missing most of the times we’ve looked in 2010. There have been a few drops here and there, but nothing to match the days when Blazers, Dunks and Vandals were at the core of the Nike Sport Culture strategy. So here’s a blast from the past with a new WMNS Vandal High, a pair that maximizes the ’70s basketball aesthetic with a super clean three-toned colorway. An all-white base finds select orange hits on the strap and sole, with the heel tab adding just a touch of gold.
