In what comes as a total shock to anyone following the plethora of new and upcoming snakeskin sneakers, not every Chinese New Year-themed 2013 release will feature a scaled treatment. Three Stripes looks outside the box with a trio of black and gold CNY releases totally sans snake, this YOTS-hinting Courtside Collection bringing forth the adidas Originals Forum Mid, the recently debuted Tech Street Mid and the third installation of the adiRise series, AR 3.0. These are available at Shoe Palace retail locations, a curious case of exclusivity that could see these spike in value given that most of the country and the vast majority of the world isn’t near one of their doors.

Joining a variety of earlier and upcoming releases that at least for now has adidas positioned as the Year of the Snake sneaker leader, the newest scale-Striped release has just arrived at retail. The adidas Originals Decade OG Mid joins the Superstar ’80s with those Chinese jade-inspired hangtags, but instead of an all-over serpent treatment, these Decades keep the scaly look to accents on a black suede upper. Everyone else is kicking off the Lunar New Year early, so join the party now that these CNY Decade OGs are available straight from adidas.

adidas Originals didn’t wait until the Year of the Snake to start adding serpentine sides to plenty of their classic designs. So if anything, their expertise with this look should produce some of the best in what’s shaping up to be the most sneaker-heavy Chinese New Year yet. Three new adidas Originals Forum Mid makeups make great use of the stuff, adding it to the mid-’80s basketballer’s famed ankle strap and ‘X’ and making us wonder what other signature design elements aside from the Stripes might be snakebitten for 2013. Stick with Sneaker News to find that and if this SS13 trio that just went up for pre-order at select Japanese retailers makes it stateside.

The Forum Mid has been a mainstay in the adidas Originals lineup for years now, and while we’ve seen notable variations like Jeremy Scott’s ‘Money’ edition or the ladies-only ‘Kawall’, it somehow missed a variation seen on several other mid-’80s basketball silhouettes. The adidas Originals Forum Mid XL brings the kind of extreme branding we’ve seen on J.Scott’s ObyO drops and their offspring to the ankle of this strapped classic, a move that adds even more contrast to this bold black and gold Pittsburgh-ish pair. They’re out now at select Three Stripe retailers like Afew and you can see more images below before you buy.

Each of the adidas Originals Forum Mid releases we’ve profiled on Sneaker News this year have come with a special theme or modification, but this latest drop reinforces that not only is Three Stripes 1984 lineup one of the all-time graduating classes (ZX 500s, LA Trainers, etc), but also that this particular model has plenty more good vibes to share. Dark Royal accents on a Dark Indigo suede upper offers a different perspective on adidas’ familiar A.039 branding while a white sole provides some contrast and further evokes the company’s familiar packaging. Click through to see more of what’s in the newest Forum Mid RS box and grab yours today from Titolo.

Coming on the heels of the two LDRS1354-designed ‘Moccasin’ pairs comes a new adidas Originals Forum Mid created by Three Stripes’ in house designers, one that feels familiar thanks to a couple other recent standouts. This new Forum Mid ‘Diamond’ is blacked-out in a mix of smooth and patent leathers, adding white to the midsole for a bit of contrast while the multicolored lateral ankle studs play the starring role. Just by their coloring, these don’t appear to be the same Swarovski crystals used on the white Superstar XLs that hit a short while back, and they’re a far cry from the $2500 asking price for those colette x Jeremy Scott JS Wings that released in 2009. Click through to get a better view, let us know what you think of crystal studs’ place in snekaer design, and pick up yours today from adidas Originals retailers like Size?.

Sneaker News hasn’t covered too many of Japanese avant gardists Visvim’s recent releases, but are they back on the scene now, this time in collaboration with adidas Originals? Put simply, the answer is ‘no’, but you can’t deny the connections this new Three Stripes collabo shares with that Native American-inspired brand. In fact, the Leaders 1354 x adidas Originals Forum Moccasin Mid can be seen to borrow from Visvim’s shrouded FBT chukka, a model that has on many occasions offered a similar frilly collar, and one that directly influenced a whole range of subsequent releases from other brands. This new pair goes with a deep brown leather whose blue embroidery accents give a clue as to some of the upper’s undertones, and they’ll be available this Saturday, December 17th straight from LDRS1354. via RegularOlTy
