Last week, we learned that adidas Originals would be bringing back the original Keyshawn Johnson cross trainer, a move that sits at the nexus of the EQT and FYW bringback campaigns. This week, we get a reminder that an even more obscure signature trainer is also on the horizon, though this one isn’t a retro because the mid-’90s original was scrapped and never made it to retail. The adidas Mutombo Trainer has an oversized tongue and tribal print midfoot velcro strap, along with another stability boost from the polymer Stripe/eyelet wings. The adidas Mutombo returns this August and we’ve seen a few more colorways on tap for the coming months. Now comes word that we can expect to see a ‘retro’ for a shoe that never actually released, as Three Stripes reaches even deeper into their vaults and finds a scrapped sample model. The Mutombo TR Block fits right into the era of its creation, so well in fact it’s hard to imagine why this 1994 prototype never hit store shelves.
