No doubt the greatest NBA player to come out of the Congo, Dikembe Mutombo, is about to see his signature style with adidas back on shelves. The adidas Mutombo, which celebrated Mt. Mutombo’s African heritage, will be back in 2013. The sneakers come complete with his #55 up on the ankle area in contrast to the slightly reworked sample we saw of the scrapped 2008 retro. Check out some new images of the upcoming adidas Mutombo reissue and grab them now on a pre-order from Inflammable, who plans on shipping their pairs out in July.

As hinted at throughout last year, the adidas Mutombo is indeed coming back in 2013. The Dikembe Mutombo signature sneaker is currently on deck as a Fall/Winter release, so there’s still a bit of waiting to do-but Sneaker News has got you covered with previews of what to expect. There will be at least three colorways, including the OG black/red/white and a couple more that rein in a bit of extra color. Remember just over a month ago when adidas took to Instagram to test the waters as far as reception towards a potential retro of the classic adidas Mutombo? Well, judging by the support we saw in the comments of that particular post we’d say that a bring back could definitely be a hit. On top of that here’s evidence that they’d have at least one supporter among the celebrity set: Teyana Taylor, who is pictured here showing off her vintage pair on the way to the gym. Instagram just underwent a significant overhaul and its “Fast beautiful photo sharing” tagline has never been more true. You’ve gotta believe that a company Facebook valued at over a billion dollars did their due diligence and worked through tons of user feedback before they implemented the elegant new design, and it seems that adidas is doing something similar utilizing that very service. Three Stripes’ Instagram account posted an image with a note that “Basketball players wore these in the early 90′s,” but one need look no longer than the ’55′s and ‘Mount Mutombo’ on the tongue tag to realize it was actually just one guy. The adidas Mutombo released during the 1992-93 season and brought together one of the NBA’s most unique personalities with the explosion of hip-hop culture and their shared African influences. Their pattern-heavy upper is the kind of thing we’ve seen from Jeremy Scott’s ObyO capsule as well as 2010′s ‘Bin 23′ Air Jordan VII; should adidas add another to that list of tribal throwbacks with a Mutombo retro release?
