There’s been much discussion on the steadily shrinking list of yet-to-be-Retroed OG Air Jordan colorways as we approach the ‘Obsidian’ XII’s first release in fifteen years, and while they’re not targeted at the same portion of the market, here’s a lifestyle design that also makes you wonder what’s left in sneaker designers’ collective tanks.  In a world where new hybrid designs pop up with each passing day, it’s somewhat shocking that only Vans has gotten close to the maximum potential out of the classic European rope-soled style.  But as we move through traditional styles like boat shoes, duck boots and wingtips, we’re bound to see more models like this United Arrows x adidas Originals Rod Laver.  This model simply applies a veggie fiber weave to its timeless shape, and in remaking itself suggests that almost every mid-’80s-and-earlier model we’ve come to know and love could excel with this same style.  Let us know how this Rod Laver espadrille turned out, which other models you might like to see with its distinctive sole style and stick with Sneaker News for updates on the May 2012 release.

adidas Originals Rod Laver Vintage Lux – UK Exclusives

adidas originals rod laver vintage UK adidas Originals Rod Laver Vintage Lux UK Exclusives

The beloved Rod Laver lowtop recently joined the adidas Skateboarding lineup, but that doesn’t mean the Originals division is going to stop cranking out new colorways from this time tested tennis pro.  The adidas Originals Rod Laver Vintage Lux brings three new pairs together with the same basic construction: premium canvas uppers accented by tonal brushed suede toes, tongues and heel tabs, all riding a white sole and with a golden top eyelet thrown in for good measure.  This formula works perfectly on black and navy pairs that add white contrast stitching, though the look of a brown design with a more muted approach to its lines suggests they could have done just as well with tonal embroidery.  Click through to see all three pairs up close and look for these exclusively at UK retailers like Size? next month.

One of the earliest people to lock down a signature shoe in the modern era, Rod Laver was an adidas athlete who made the Three Stripes brand famous while winning countless tennis tournaments back in the 70s. Ironically his sneaker did so without even bearing the three stripes, wiped clean of the typical adidas look as a result of strict outfit guidelines. The adidas Originals Rod Laver Vintage is back again with a clean white mesh wrapping the upper, along with some suede and leather hits to give the sneaker a bit of material range. Follow the jump for some extra angles of this classic from adidas Originals and hit up Size? to get a pair for yourself.

Around these parts, the lion’s share of retro signature sneakers that pop up bear the names of basketball’s elite. A bit of an anomaly in that category is the adidas Rod Laver, a low-top sneaker made for the tennis master of the same name that made its debut long before anyone wanted to be like Mike. Having since been reinvented a handful of times, the latest version of the shoe comes from the adidas Skateboarding division. This particular model was done up by team rider Dennis Busenitz, whose name pops up on the heel section of the midsole and the unique tongue tag. Busenitz keeps the colorway pretty straightforward, with a smooth black suede paired up with contrastive white stitching. adidas Skateboarding draws upon Three Stripes’ rich history for its footwear collection, borrowing familiar models and design elements for their ‘All In’ riders. The convention to this point had been to assign a signature model to each individual skater, but when the adidas Skate Rod Laver debuts next spring, we’ll see pairs dedicated to Dennis Busenitz, Silas Baxter-Neal and Lucas Puig, each rider’s name plastered on the heels. adidas Originals June 2011 Footwear @ Extra Butter

adidas Originals tends to rely less upon official release dates than Nike Sportswear, but here’s a case when a whole heap of new Three Stripes classics have come available at once.  When you’ve got a collection like this that runs the gamut of a brand’s heritage models, it can be hard to pick a standout model, so we’ll just start at the bottom of the list (in alphabetical order, that is) with a new adidas ZX500 in a colorway that would have been right at home in Philly around the model’s 1984 debut.  That rounds out the running category, but there are plenty more lowtops thanks to a duo of Gazelle IIs plus one Gazelle OG, the immortal Rod Laver and Stan Smith, and one pair of Campuses.  Rounding out the group are two newer designs, both lifestyle oriented midtops with basketball inspiration in the adiRise Mid and Roundouse Mid.  Click through for shots of the entire set and look for yours at select adidas Originals accounts like New York’s Extra Butter.
