Yohji Yamamoto’s Nomad Star midtop made a polarizing splash when we recently previewed its unique shroud, but what kind of response can we predict from this more traditional lowtop version? Right off the bat, the shelltoed lowcut look should be more familiar on this new adidas Y-3 Nomad Star Low, though it’s far more likely to be connected to the iconic Superstar than any of the forgettable Pro Model performance lowtops that released over the past few years. And while these won’t break necks in quite the same way as the bagged-up midtop, smartly placed lines ensure these subdued colorways will indeed turn heads. Before Jeremy Scott became the posterchild for adidas Originals’ bold fashion sense, Japanese visionairy Yohji Yamamoto was breaking necks with Euro-inspired lifestyle sneaker designs to which the rest of the lifestyle sneaker market has still to catch. It’s hard to argue he’s anywhere but the peak of his powers when you see this newest adidas Y-3 design, one of many Yamamoto designs featuring nontraditional lacing. But we’ve never seen the laces and basically the entire upper of a shoe covered in a shroud like the new Y-3 Nomad Star, a mix of velvety suede and grainy leather that transforms the classic Pro Model midtop silhouette beyond recognition. Say what you want about the adidas Y-3 line, but you can’t argue that they aren’t pushing the conventions when it comes to sneaker construction. Never afraid to think outside of the box, or anywhere even remotely close to the box, Yohji Yamamoto has been cranking out hits for over a decade now. We’ve got a preview here of whats in store for 2012, showing off an interesting pair that takes the adidas Superstar silhouette and wraps it up in thick elastic cords, held in place by sturdy metal d-rings. Never one to settle for ‘standard’, Japanese visionary designer Yohji Yamamoto has once again remixed some of today’s common aesthetics and come up with something wildly unique. The latest in a long line of avant garde looks from the adidas x Y-3 sublabel, the Y-3 Kubo Mid is a fitting name even if this is more of a hightop, since everything about its design is exaggerated. These joints are crafted in a stretchy mesh that meets a Superstar-like shell toe and rests on a sole so crazy it’d make Reebok ZigTechs do a double-take. The only thing calm about these is their black and white color scheme, which seems to invite you to come up with even crazier clothing combos with which to pair them. The Yohji Yamamoto x adidas Y-3 collaboration is among the industry’s longest running and most prolific, not to mention most expensive on a pair to pair basis. But it can definitely warrant the steep price tag when you can couple premium construction with standout style, and that’s exactly what you’ll get with this new pair of Y-3 Hayworth II Mids. Really more of a hightop, the second Hayworth is done in a tonal black look with and orange liner that might bring Halloween to mind, with the distinct heel counter on this pair suggesting you should go as a 1960s recording artist. The collaboration between adidas and Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto is among the longest running and most prolific in the history of sneakers. The adidas Y-3 capsule has been bringing you super-sleek progressive designs for years now, 10 to be exact, and with a decade in the books it’s time for some celebratin’. Here’s a look at the adidas Y-3 10th Anniversary collection for spring/summer 2011, a set of forward thinking designs that’s limited to 300 per pair.
