The confluence of a Christmas 2011 Air Jordan XI Retro ‘Concord’ release and the past few years’ general trend toward elegant if simple colorways has resulted in this spring being totally inundated with the kind of sneakers that are always on store shelves, yet often get overlooked for flashier builds. Spring ’12 is the season for black and white designs, this new adidas Originals ZX 500 reminding us that the real reason these kinds of looks are so popular is that this one is just as plausible as an OG from 1984. So not only are you getting the hottest palette of the young year, but on a silhouette with serious experience and that nod-worthy old school look; the question now is not whether you’ll get a pair, but which size to grab from Three Stripes stores like SNS.

The last few adidas Originals ZX 500 releases have offered simple colorways in step with this season’s dominant trend, which means this latest edition stands out from the pack quite a bit. They’re nowhere near as crazy as some of Three Stripes mid-’00s output or the current smash hit Jeremy Scott collabo, but this ZX500 in Super Green and Light Scarlett is most certainly an eye-grabber. They’re reminiscent of a standout Nike Air Max+ 2012 with this carefully un-Christmas-y combination of green and red, and hopefully indicate more curious palettes to come. We’ve seen the worlds of sneakers and comic books collide again and again, whether it be through custom creations paying homage or through certified collabos. Is this latest version of the adidas Originals ZX 500 another case of that? Well no, not officially, but if you’ve spent any time flipping through Marvel pages then it’s hard not to take a look at this blue and yellow combo without being reminded of the OG X-Men uniforms. But if you’re not into comics (or you’re strictly a DC person) then you can take these at face-value as just another colorful version of this classic adidas runner. The last time we saw the adidas ZX 500 it was in the Consortium ‘Tabula Rasa’ Collection, with completely a snow white look for this 80′s runner. Well if you passed on those for their lack of color, these two releases coming down the pipeline might be more your style. First up is the black and cyan look, with the sleek aqua tones giving the black upper a lighter touch. Then there’s the red/white/grey colorway that conforms more to the image of classic sportswear, with a sporty colorway that always works on a pair of trainers. The Latin phrase ‘Tabula Rasa’ translates to ‘blank slate’, a reminder of a time when Romans took notes on wax slates, erasing them by melting the surface back to its pristine state. That’s pretty much what adidas Originals is doing with the Consortium sublabel after having tossed it into the kindling not too long after that insane aZX Collection, and Three Stripes has applied the concept of renewal to its relaunch. It was just about a week ago that Sneaker News scooped you with word of the impending return of adidas Consortium, and now we have more details on the five-shoe comeback run. The adidas Originals ’Tabula Rasa’ collection takes its aesthetic from the Latin for ‘blank slate’, a look that translates perfectly to the modern language of style with a quintet of tonal White Vapour classics. In addition to their pristine appearance, these silhouettes are some of the lesser seen Three Stripes heritage models, the adidas Originals ZX 500 far and away the most familiar in a group that also includes the BC, Decade, Pro Shell and Matchplay. With the Nike Air Max 1 making a huge mark on the footwear industry in 1987, 86′s adidas ZX 500 and other models of its ilk became a thing of the past as the industry leaders moved toward technology driven performance. But even if it looks more than a year older than the AM1, the ZX500 certainly shares a penchant for simple suede colorways and this new pair can hold its own against any of the retro runners we’ve seen from any brand in 2011.
