Jordan Brand took their sweet time with ‘Year of the Rabbit’ releases in 2011, extending the Chinese New Year theme far beyond the February holiday and well into the fall months. This time around we’ve seen no indication that suggests a similar follow-up, but the Air Jordan 2012 Deluxe ’Year of the Dragon’ is indeed moving on its own schedule: a Thursday, February 23rd release that comes a full month after the earliest Lunar New Year in four decades. The water dragon-inspired look will arrive at select JB retailers like Millennium Sports in just a couple of days, but with the NBA All-Star and accompanying ‘Galaxy’ collection about to also hit store shelves, where’s your focus for this biggest of NBA weekends? If you’re locked in on these YOTD’s you can avoid the messy weekend rush by picking up a pair now on eBay.

In the end, all that matters is if the shoe looks good on your feet. If it doesn’t, chances are it won’t be a popular item, even if the shoe promises to make you jump twice as high or perform some other physical feat that was at once unattainable. Over the last few decades, footwear designers have successfully welded design and function into some of the greatest sneakers of all-time, starting with the debut of Air Max technology in 1987 to the six-combo interchangeable cushioning presented by the Air Jordan 2012. Sprinkled in-between this chronological list is some of technologies that you might’ve forgotten, like Reebok’s DMX or Converse’s Helium, so check out some of what made Complex’s list below and head to Complex for the full twenty-five.

“We always start with performance. We always start with trying to make a better basketball shoe.”
One of the reasons true genius is so rare, is that those capable of bar-setting achievements are very likely to be unable to describe exactly how they got there. In the case of a groundbreaking designer, it’s a bit more likely that they’ll be able to guide you through the process, and in the case of someone with as much experience as Tinker Hatfield, coming up with new neckbreakers is now down to a science. Tinker and Tom Luedeke began the Air Jordan 2012 with superior on-court action in mind, and were able to offer the most complete set of personalization options ever on a basketball shoe, all while incorporating inspiration from Portland’s classic ‘Jumptown’ jazz scene. Jordan Brand had a bunch of surprises in store for last year’s NBA All-Star Game, including special edition G-Shocks, skateboard decks and a wear test in Los Angeles that invited Jordanheads to try out the Air Jordan 2011′s Quick/Explosive cushioning system. The leadup has been similarly quiet as we approach the ASG in Orlando, but there is now at least one piece of photographic evidence that JB’s on the road to somewhere. The mobile Air Jordan 2012 Flight Lab was seen out on the interstate yesterday, with the photographer‘s Twitter feed displaying GPS coordinates for somewhere north of Portland. In other words, the semi was spotted heading out of Beaverton to parts unknown; maybe they’ll hit a city near you, or even the upcoming All-Star Weekend? Keep your eyes on the JB Twitter page and check back with Sneaker News for updates.

Sneaker News posed the question if this past Saturday was indeed the biggest sneaker release day ever, and it’s pretty hard to beat a lineup that deep. It could happen on Black Friday 2012 at the rate we’re going now, but in the meantime, Nike and Jordan Brand managed to commemorate the most romantic of holidays with a custom-built love letter to basketball’s greats of yesterday and today. Along with the Nike LeBron 9 iD ‘Foamposite’, NIKEiD will debut the Air Jordan 2012 iD with what has to be the most immersive and thorough customization process ever offered. The AJ2012′s six insole/bootie combinations add impressive depth to your level of control, and these sample colorways suggest some fine artistry is easily within your grasp. Click through to see a variety of designs ranging from one strikingly similar to the ‘Wolf Grey’ Deluxe to a black, white and red joint whose glossy Flywire base shows how the twenty-seventh Air Jordan offers an evolution of some of the ideas present in the beloved Eleventh (Tinker’s designs for both were inspired by fine dress shoes). The AJ2012 iD is just about to launch on NIKEiD; which palette do you have planned for yours?

College basketball offered up some premium entertainment last night as the UNC Tar Heels squared off against the big-time rival Duke Blue Devils and Big East heavyweights Syracuse and Georgetown got down and dirty in Western NY. Not much more can be said about the history behind these two match-ups; Duke and UNC have been trading blows for decades, while ‘Cuse and G-Town – without question one of the biggest rivalries in college sports – threw down in what is likely to be their last bout in the Carrier Dome, so it’s clear why Jordan Brand selected this great night to debut the all-new Air Jordan 2012. The UNC Tar Heels sported PE colorways of the Air Jordan 2012 ‘University Blue’, while Georgetown spiced things up by throwing some Volt into the mix by way of the ‘Wolf Grey’ joints. We’ve got some nice in-game action shots for you below so take a look and stick with Sneaker News for more NCAA Feet action as we near the tournament! via Yahoo

Unless you’ve been hiding under a large rock, the Air Jordan 2012 made a triumphant debut yesterday, with a special media event arranged by Jordan Brand in Teterboro Airport in New Jersey. One of the debut releases of the Air Jordan 2012 was the ‘UNC’ in University Blue and Dark Steel Grey, and tonight the Tar Heels will wear their own ‘UNC’ version as we get a sneak peek at the Air Jordan 2012 in the Tar Heels PE. It features the same luxurious suede (seriously the best suede we’ve seen on an Air Jordan in ages) with Michael Jordan’s alma mater branded smack dab in the center of the upper and personalized numbers and message on the medial side-wall. Take a quick look at the Air Jordan 2012 UNC Tar Heels PE after the jump and keep an eye for these if you’re gonna catch the UNC/Duke game tonight. via russbengston
