Jordan Brand’s remastering of its classic models (the Air Jordan II to the Air Jordan 2.0, the AJ8 becoming the Air Jordan 8.0) was an idea that dates back to late 2009 when the Air Jordan Alpha 1 released. The Alpha 1 kept it true to the original design of the Air Jordan 1, and instead replaced the shoe with upgraded parts like a Phylon midsole, a lightweight and breathable mesh lining, seamless construction on portions of the upper. For Fall 2011, the Jordan Brand introduced the low-top version of the Alpha 1; this August release utilizes a tonal black motif with matte silver accents on the shoe. Jordan Brand has given us reason to expect future technical upgrades to Air Jordan Legacy Models, the AJ 8.0 having just followed after the Max Air-upgraded 2.0. But it was the Air Jordan Alpha 1 that started this trend, a model that refreshed the shoe that changed the world, slimming its stored silhouette and adding Zoom Air cushioning. And now the Alpha 1 is back as a lowtop, this first Air Jordan Alpha 1 Low colorway representing the transition in Michael Jordan’s life from UNC Tar Heel to Chicago Bull. Before the Air Jordan 2.0 and news of the Air Jordan 8.0, there was the Air Jordan Alpha 1. It was a contemporary tribute to the Air Jordan 1, given a retooled upper with sleek styling in the form of perforated panels, a new midsole, an updated traction design, and updated cushioning. The Air Jordan Alpha 1 debuted last year and news of a low-top was leaked not much later, and this August will feature the first official release of the low-top in a tonal-black colorway. Here’s a look at a Red/White/Blue version that should drop sometime this year; the simple color-blocking makes for a casual sneaker with comfort to boot. The Air Jordan Alpha 1 Low is a modern take on the classic basketball shoe that started Michael’s footwear legacy. Fortunately, the Alpha 1 doesn’t stray too far from the OG Air Jordan 1 on which it was built, maintaining the general silhouette but opting for more advanced materials on the insides. The sole for example comes with an encapsulated air package in the heel area and additional grooves for added flexibility. Another new feature is the seamless upper, an option that was unheard of for sneakers when the Air Jordan 1 debuted back in 1985.
