Where there’s fire, there’s smoke. And where there’s smoke you’re gonna need a gas mask. Freehand Profit doesn’t have one of those for us this time, instead offering up a more straightforward mask creation. The piece is just a bit more conservative than usual, sourcing just one pair of the Air Jordan IV “Fire Red” in its creation. Rihanna’s got a pretty decent Air Jordan game, you know that. The singer is shown here posing with the Air Jordan IV “Fire Red” on feet, presumably a pair from last year that doesn’t actually use fire red as its color shade of choice. Her entourage though? The last time an Air Jordan Hydro sandal released was just before the ‘White Cement’ Air Jordan III Retro in early 2011. About eighteen months later, another red-accented white leather Tinker Hatfield classic is set to arrive as a 23rd anniversary retro, and this time, there’s plenty of warm weather for the accompanying sandal preview. The ‘Fire Red’ Air Jordan IV Hydro takes its name and colorway from the August drop that had Spike Lee’s Mars Blackmon on its heel last time around. Just like August’s Fours, these Hydro 4s opt for a more pristine appeal (along with Varsity instead of the OG F-Red), but you’ll notice in more photos below the absence of a visible Air cushion like the one we admired on the faithfully-tooled Hydro IIIs. Many recent Sneaker News headlines have focused on the various ‘Gold Medal’ and otherwise Olympic Air Jordans set to hit retailers in the coming months, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of other classics on tap for what figures to be the most densely packed summer on record. This Air Jordan 4 Retro hearkens back to the original ‘Fire Red’ edition that was reprised in 2006 with the ‘Mars Blackmon’ face on the heels, but unlike that ’06 Varsity Red edition, these come sans Spike. That seems more than fair given the success of the Son of Mars and Spike Lee’s insane Foamposite PEs, but would the OG shade of red make these more of a lock (especially given the stiff competition)? Charles Barkley recently went on record as saying the level of play this year in the NBA is so poor that the league should consider contracting a few of its worst teams. Perhaps that’s just a contrast to last year’s spectacular regular season, arguably the best since the dissolution of the Jordan-era Bulls. This sentiment that last year was the best in a long time was perhaps surpassed by the number of in-the-know sneakerheads who considered 2011 the best year for Air Jordan Retro releases ever. There was too much heat to mention here, but among the standouts was the trio of Air Jordan III Retros from the OG quartet.
And even if the rapid-fire regular season might be the cause of Sir Charles’ complaints, increased frequency is having the opposite effect on Jays, as 2012′s giant run of Air Jordan IV Retros has this year poised to be even better than the one that just ended. Following up on the ‘White Cement’ release in about two weeks will be the at least five others, including the ‘Fire Red’ Air Jordan 4 that’s expected in stores like Carlos Prieto‘s SoleFly this August. That leaves the ‘Military Blue’ and ‘Black Cement’ OGs as well as the new ‘Knicks’ colorup we showed you this morning and a 23rd anniversary edition. This means the AJ4 will have it all over the Threes this time around, even if the 1988 model did end up winnning our OG Air Jordan tournament last spring.
