In 2014, rappers are given sneakers with increasing frequency. And we don’t mean “given” in the sense of blessed with promotional pairs ahead of the release date, but rather they’ve had more and more opportunities to channel their personae into limited footwear collections thanks to the support of sneaker companies. This process didn’t happen overnight though, it took a couple of decades of endorsements before the floodgates really opened as far as special SMUs went. You of course have to give credit to Run DMC back in the ’80s for championing their adidas, and to a lesser extent LL Cool J for linking up with Troop (Although fellow Queens rapper MC Shan didn’t approve).

If you weren’t in the thick of things when the Air Jordan IV “Laser” first released in the Black and White colorways, here’s a quick recap: Nike was experimenting with Laser graphics heavily, and the Air Jordan IV was used as a canvas to showcase the awesome detailing. We first showed you the Air Jordan 5Lab4 yesterday with hints of lasering, but you can now see the upper in its full etched glory with the flash activating the bright feature. The Air Jordan Elements series continues with a look at the first Air Jordan 4 silhouette of the collection – the Air Jordan 5Lab4. The shoes are feature the Air Jordan IV model with the signature details of the Air Jordan V – the reflective nature of the upper, the translucent outsole, and the silver accents on the midsole. These are almost an identical style of the Air Jordan 5Lab3 that dropped earlier this year, isn’t it? If you look carefully, it appears that some lasering is on the upper as well.
