Has Russell Westbrook been playing a little bit of catch up as far as the more sought after Air Jordan pairs out there now that he’s a Jordan Brand man or was this pair of the Air Jordan V ‘Tokyo23′ already in his collection? He was never a dude who really popped up on the sneakerhead athlete radar, but we wouldn’t put it past Russell to have had these in the rotation since way back given his tendencies for attention grabbing outfits. Get with us after the jump for the full photo of Russell Westbrook’s 2013 NBA All-Star celebrity game ensemble featuring the Air Jordan V ‘Tokyo23′ on feet and give us your two cents on his fit in the comments section.

Air Jordan III ‘Tokyo23′ Custom by El Cappy

Hip-hop culture and sneakerheadism share much in common, so after last summer’s countless ‘Beamer, Benz or Bentley’ reduxes and this year’s seemingly infinite variations on Rick Ross’ favorite cadence, it’s fitting that 2011 has been the year of the colorway customs.  We’re talking specifically about reappropriating famous palettes on other classic silhouettes as in the case of our Air Jordan VI customs battle, and this newest such remix borrows a look released from that model’s immediate predecessor.  The Air Jordan V ‘Tokyo23′ dropped in limited numbers a short while ago and Detroit-based customizer El Cappy decided it’d also look good on the ‘Pure $’ AJ3, the all-white Three from 2007.  He was right, and the Pures’ white base likely made for an easier job than some we’ve seen; how do they rank against the best palette mashups?  Click through for more images and leave a comment to let us know what you think.

Nearly as much as their lyrical content will consist of the themes that have dominated rap over the last decade or so, we’ve come to expect being impressed by Maybach Music Group‘s sneaker choices.  The latest example comes in the form of images snapped of Wale and J.Cole’s recent shoot for the ‘Bad Girls Club’ video, where these two rappers were spotted rocking the Air Jordan II from the ‘Candy Pack’ and Air Jordan VII ‘Bin 23′, respectively.  Furthering the heat quotient was MMG founder Rick Ross, who has probably earned himself a few new haters courtesy of his AJ5 ‘Quai 54′ that we just learned will not make retail in the States.  Click through for a closer look and stick with Sneaker News for more celebrity sneaker sightings.  via YBF

What you see before your eyes is the Air Jordan V ‘Tokyo23′, quite possibly one of the sneakers to be given a coveted spot on Sneaker News’ Top 30 Sneakers of 2011. All attention was directed toward Japan due to the tragic natural disaster, and never before did a sneaker seem less important, but in a way, the launch of the Jordan Brand Tokyo23 website gave some added attention sorely needed by the people of the country – and perhaps that led to more donations and charitable funding. Nearly a month after the release and the Air Jordan V T23 is still a talked-about shoe, so if you’ve been looking for a pair and are willing to pony up the cash, RMKStore has a few sizes available, but you can also check for your size on eBay.
