sneakernews top 30 2012 1a Sneaker News Top 30 of 2012

For better or worse, 2012 was a defining year for the sneaker world and all that it encompasses. It was a year that saw certain shoes throw the laws of supply and demand so out of whack, that brands and retailers had to completely rethink the way they sell shoes to the public just to keep the peace. If you were willing to put in some legwork or, better yet, had the right connections, it was a banner year for sneaker enthusiasts. “Must-have” releases seemed to be at an all-time high and nearly every weekend offered up some sort of temptation for consumers. 2012 saw the release of some of the most eagerly anticipated and passionately sought-after sneakers the game had ever seen and it’s safe to say that things will never be the same again.

In between those, there were plenty of other desirable targets along the way, from the special limited editions and collaborations to beloved Retro returns and promising new designs and innovations. There were even a few certified sleeper hits that organically carved out their place among the year’s best releases. Due to an exponentially expanding consumer base and a heightened level of product awareness, you might not have been able to get your hands on every shoe you hunted for in 2012, but there was certainly no shortage of solid alternatives ripe for the picking in their absence.

The macabre-looking visage of a gas mask with the American stars and stripes hanging in the background? No, it’s not the latest bit of Banksy artwork – it’s another chopped and screwed sneaker by Freehand Profit. Using the recently dropped Air Jordan VI ‘Olympic’ Retro and a patriotic backdrop for this photoshoot, Freehand Profit unveils his latest Gas Mask donned in a familiar Red, White, and Blue, with a volunteer model willing to un-deadstock his own Air Jordan VI ‘Olympics’, acting as the podium. This Air Jordan VI ‘Olympic’ will be featured in Freehand’s book titled ‘Army Of The Undeadstock’, which will feature more than 100 pages of sneaker masks – some we have yet to see. More of this Olympic variety after the jump!

Kevin Durant & Kobe Bryant Arrive in London Wearing Air Jordans

The ’92 Dream Team vs. 2012 USAB debate was pretty much settled on Monday night when the 2012 squad, despite coming out victorious, was given a rather hard time by the Brazil squad (even trailing by 10 points at on junction in the game). But regardless of how prideful the 2012 team members feel, they still pay homage to the Great One because Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant, two of Nike’s three top athletes, arrived in London wearing Air Jordans (KD in the Olympics, Kobe in the Air Jordan 1 ‘Vegas’). Although this isn’t the slightest bit a betrayal to Nike, make that three-of-three of Nike Basketball’s Big Three putting their own signature shoes aside in favor of classic Air Jordans (Durant was seen wearing the White/Cement IV during his stop at Barry Farm last Friday). More of KD and Kobe in their Air Jordans below, so take a look and let us know if you think Nike’s signature athletes should be obligated to stick with their own brand (or even their own shoes). By a show of hands (or comments, or thumbs ups): Who copped the Air Jordan VI ‘Olympic’? This weekend’s Air Jordan Retro release was deemed by some as the most anticipated of the year, even after a number of Air Jordans were confirmed throughout the course of the year. In light of the release of the Olympics, we have a quick comparison of both the 2012 Retro and the 2000 ‘original’ (by original, we mean the first time these dropped, although these are not an OG colorway). The primary difference is the color-blocking on the midsole, but here we see that on the medial side, all is the same! Check out the quick angles below, and let us know if you have both the 2000 and 2012 versions of this all-time classic.

Air Jordan VI “Olympic” – Release Reminder

jordan vi olympic reminder 08 Air Jordan VI Olympic Release Reminder

Twelve years ago, Ray Allen went to his first Olympic Games and earned a Gold Medal for USA, leading the team in scoring during the opening preliminary game against China and tying for the team lead in points during the Gold Medal game against France. The fifth-year veteran got his first taste of mainstage victory with that Gold Medal, as an NCAA National Championship and NBA Championship eluded him up until that point. It was during this Olympic run that Ray Allen sported the Air Jordan VI ‘Olympic’, bringing the Gold standard to the Jumpman brand that signed him on as one of its future faces. The original 2000 version of this colorway remains one of the most highly sought-after collectibles in the Air Jordan catalog, and tomorrow, a Retro release with minor differences will hit stores, giving Air Jordan fans new and old to revisit this iconic moment in Ray’s career. More of the Air Jordan VI ‘Olympic’ below, so be sure to cop these tomorrow at Jordan Brand retailers, or get ‘em now from yellownsxt on eBay.

This Saturday, Air Jordan fans will get to relive one of the most celebrated moments in basketball history – Ray Allen winning a Gold Medal as a representative of Michael Jordan’s brand. Ray’s been the longest-tenured athlete on the Jordan Brand roster, so the return of the Olympic VI is as much of a tribute to Ray and his Hall Of Fame career as it is to MJ’s international legacy. There’s no doubt that the first true Olympic VI (don’t forget the 2008 ‘Beijing’ and upcoming 2012 ‘Golden Moments) will be one of the best sneaker releases of the year, as it was voted as one of the most anticipated releases during our 2011 Reader’s Choice Poll, so let’s hear it again: are these a instant ‘cop’ for you? Check out Jordan Brand’s official images and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
