The associations between Rajon Rondo and the Nike Basketball Hyperfuse series are as strong as Rorschach and ink blots, but just like pretty much every guy in the NBA right now, Rondo grew up idolizing Michael Jordan. One of the players who helped to promote NBA2K11 by reliving some of MJ’s greatest moments continued to reimagine history over in the Philippines, where Rondo rocked the ‘Olympic’ Air Jordan VII Retro (and matching Dream Team ’92 shorts) during a stop on the Red Bull King of Rock Tour. The annual tradition of basketball simulation video games continues with this October’s NBA 2K13, but in this Olympic year, gamers have a little something special waiting for us. NBA 2K has confirmed that both the 1992 NBA Dream Team and the 2012 USA Basketball Team will be featured in the game, allowing those manning the console control to determine the outcome of the much-debated ’92 vs. ’12 discussion. In addition it appears that some of the original sneakers from the 1992 Dream Team will return as well, like Michael Jordan’s Air Jordan VII ‘Olympic’ and Larry Bird and Magic Johnson in Converse (seen here in the Weapon, although Larry wore the Converse Bird USA and Magic wore the Converse Magic USA). In addition, Blake Griffin, Kevin Durant, and Derrick Rose share the cover of the latest NBA 2K installment so check out this sick NBA 2K rendering of the ’92 squad after the jump.

This Sunday, the Jordan Brand label brought home two more Gold Medals thanks to two of its marquee athletes – Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul. This latest apparel offering from Jordan Brand juxtaposes the ’12 members with ’92′s Michael Jordan as all three athletes are wearing their respective kicks – MJ in the Air Jordan VII ‘Olympic’ and CP3/Melo wearing the Jordan Super Fly ‘Olympic’. The shirt design is a throwback to the original Dream Team t-shirt, as Melo and Jordan hold up the Jordan global logo and CP3 drapes the American flag on his back. One glaring omission? Jordan Brand athlete Dwyane Wade, who spent the summer rehab-ing an injury. So even thought the ’12 team brought home Gold, the debate continues is the 2012 team better than the 1992 Dream Team? In 1992, Rihanna was but a mere four-year old child, playing in the sands of Barbados without the slightest clue of her impending superstardom. If you’ve had your eyes on our extensive coverage of the World Basketball Festival events going down in Washington, DC recently then you should know that the Jordan Super.Fly is a key player in the festivities. The variety of Olympic Air Jordans on tap for summer 2012 continues to expand as we approach the upcoming London Games, but we can’t forget about the design without which, arguably none of the others would even exist. You see, before the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the USA Basketball roster was filled with top-tier college talent. And that’s not to say that they didn’t fare well in international competition; to the contrary, USAB managed to win the previous ’88 Games in Seoul to repeat the gold medal they won in 1984 with young stars including a 21 year-old Michael Jordan. Mike returned to the Five Ringed stage eight years later with what might very well be the single greatest team in the history of sport and their slaughter of the rest of the world made the ‘Olympic’ Air Jordan 7 and its ’9′ heel badge an all-time legend.
