The Air Jordan VII continues to be a hot trend in sneakers at the moment much in part due to Chris Paul’s Air Jordan VII ‘Olympic Gold Medal’ PE as well as the upcoming release of the Golden Moment Pack. But preceding the ‘Olympic’ is the original Black/True Red colorway of the Air Jordan VII that Michael Jordan debuted after the 1992 NBA All-Star Game; this OG Air Jordan introduced the off-beat purple into the primary ‘Chicago Bulls’ colorway of an Air Jordan shoe, and as Jordan Brand keeps things close to the vest with the tonal black nubuck upper and True Red distinction. The final third of the calendar year is going to start off with a bang, as the Air Jordan VII in the original Black/True Red-Dark Charcoal-Club Purple will hit Jordan Brand retailers at the first of the month this September. Even if you copped the 2009 release of the Air Jordan VII Defining Moments Package, these have that tonal pitch-black upper that is more akin to the 1992 Original and 2002 Retro. Michael Jordan’s career is defined by an endless series of seemingly ‘impossible’ moments. Leading his team to the win while battling a nasty flu, scoring a key bucket with exceptional flair against the Lakers, and hitting six three-pointers in the first-half – all of these motivational and inspiring moments came on the game’s biggest and most pressure-driven stage, which MJ seemed undeterred by. The OG True Red colorway (referred to as the ‘Raptors’ nowadays) was what Jordan wore when he attacked the Portland Trail Blazers with a barrage of threes in Game 2 of the ’92 Finals, but that moment is just one page in the tome that is Michael Jordan history. Get ready for plenty of video anthologies chronicling how Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing and the rest of the Dream Team dunked all over the entire world at the 1992 Olympic Games. The greatest team ever’s 20th anniversary presents opportunities for NBA and channels like ESPN, kind of like how those aforementioned stars had a little something extra to show the rest of the world after having been crushed by Michael Jordan in each of the past two seasons. MJ was riding high headed into Barcelona, having just captured his second straight chip by vanquishing fellow OG DT SG Clyde Drexler.
Bulls vs. Blazers (aside from being the last “… and the NBA Playoffs” title from EA) was a relatively lopsided series during which Mike’s first-half Game 1 scoring outburst elevated the design pictured above into the pantheon of legends like the ‘Bred’ Air Jordan VI, black/Infrared AJ6 ’Flu Game’ XIIs. The Air Jordan 7 ‘Raptors’ might now carry the name of a team that didn’t even exist when it debuted, but the same ‘trailblazing’ look that added purple to the familiar Chicago Bulls playoff attire is just the same as it was in ’92. They’re coming up for a September release right after the onslaught of ‘Olympic’ Air Jordans, but you can make things easier for the jam-packed back to school season by getting yours early from el-store on eBay.

A lot of older Jordan fans react to the ‘Raptors’ nickname with hesitation, and rightfully so; the sneakers debuted when the Toronto Raptors weren’t even a thought, but upon the 2002 Retro release, the Raptors name stuck like glue (the Raptors were one of the most popular teams of the league thanks to the talents of Vince Carter). If we could give these another nickname, it would be the ‘Shrug’; during Game 1 of the ’92 NBA Finals, Michael Jordan pulled of the greatest ‘half’ of play in Finals history, scoring 35 points while hitting six three-pointers. What makes that exhibit so special was that Michael, despite being the offensive juggernaut, didn’t truly operate around the perimeter – that wasn’t his forte. It was during that streak of three-pointers that pulled the Bulls away from the Blazers in Game 1, which let to an eventual blow-out victory. Of course, what we remember is Jordan’s iconic shrug as he jogged by the scorers table, which would later serve as one of the most iconic Jordanisms in history! The Air Jordan VII represents the fusion of Nike’s Huarache series with influences derived from African tribal art, the latter of which in particular contributed lines that make this one of the most intricate and thus blocking option-heavy designs in the entire Air Jordan Legacy. The Sevens played with wild color schemes in a way that’d previously only been hinted by standouts like the ‘Grape’ AJ5, and two of the most memorable OGs are marked by their purples among a series of other bright pops against black nubuck. A fiercer and more Bulls-friendly expression of this colorful envelope pushing than the ‘Bordeaux’ pair retroed last year is this Air Jordan 7 we’ve come to know in recent years as the ‘Raptors’. They come off like a classic Playoff-time Jordan but the select purple hits and just a taste of yellow on the sole makes these every bit the ’92 flashback-inducing time capsule piece as ‘Baby Got Back’. Are these ‘too sexy’ to pass during an Olympic summer where we’ll be getting not only a few other AJ7s but also a ton of other Air Jordan heat? Yesterday, on the eve of Memorial Day, Sneaker News gave you just a taste of the Air Jordan VII ‘Raptors’. If you’ve been dying for a complete look, here’s the full spread of the Air Jordan VII, set to arrive in stores this September 1st; if you can recall, a similar colorway hit stores in 2009 as part of the Air Jordan VII 60+ Pack, but clearly the ones you see here has a solid-black upper which is closer to the Original as well as the 2002 Retro. Funny fact – all three editions of the ‘True Red’ (which the Jordan fan of the pre-Raptors era will refer to these as) are separated by 10 years. After this August’s release of the ‘Golden Moments Pack’, Jordan Brand will hit us with one final Air Jordan VII release – the original ‘Charcoal’ colorway that Michael wore in 1992 en route to his second NBA Title. Recognized for its unique colorway that seemed somewhat aberrant from the classic Black/Red theme of the Air Jordan line, this popular Air Jordan VII would later be dubbed the ‘Raptors’ as the Purple/Hot Red color matched the Toronto Raptors jersey – an expansion team that joined the NBA in the ’95-’96 NBA Season. That ‘Raptors’ would make a comeback in 2002 and as well as in 2009 as part of the 60+ Pack, so count this September’s release as the fourth overall issue of this colorway.
