Understated in design yet overflowing with personality, the Air Jordan X was the first Air Jordan designed during MJ’s full retirement (the Air Jordan IX was a work in progress when Michael was still rockin’ the VIII). The Air Jordan X design is rather subdued compared to the Air Jordans that bookend that saga; the IX featured a distinct pattern of perforations with the ‘global’ effect, while the Air Jordan XI, as we all know, was catapulted to a higher level with the patent leather shine. The X, featured simpler lines and clean leather uppers, but it was the outsole that told Michael Jordan’s story in a more straightforward manner than any other Air Jordan. With the return of the Chicago happening in just a few days, the folks at Kicksquad put together this neat side-by-side comparison of the 2012 Retro and the rare original from ’95; you can clearly see the differences from OG and re-issue, like the the obvious logo branding on the insole, the tongue, and of course, the inner lining. Check out the nice side-by-side clicks below and let us know if the Chicago X Retro is a must-have for you.

Sneaker News just revealed the Air Jordan X release date for the GS-sized white, black, Violet Pop and Cyber edition, but how much do you want to bet they’re not the biggest drop on Saturday, January 21st? They won’t even be the most significant Jordan Brand sneaker, much less the most hotly anticipated AJX hitting retailers next Saturday, because that’s also when we’ll be getting one of the originals, and the pair from which that kiddie version borrows its blocking pattern. The Air Jordan 10 Retro ‘Chicago’ is unlike Michael Jordan upon his return to the NBA in that they haven’t lost a step since that 1994-95 season that marked MJ’s return from baseball. Think back to the ‘Concord’ AJXI just before Christmas and the ‘Last Shot’ XIVs only a couple weeks before that and we’re looking at a stretch of releases that highlights some of the most intense ups and downs from Mike’s second stint in Chi-town, and you can see more angles on this all-time great when you click the jump below.

What other OG colorways of the Air Jordan X Retro are in store for us in 2012? Thus far, the OGs are outweighed by new colorways by a margin of 2 (Old Royal and Stealth) to 1 (these Chicago beauties). Kicking things off is the January release of one of the few remaining un-retroed OG colorways, and this new detailed viewing should only push you over the edge into must-cop-ville (population: you). These are beginning to arrive at retailers like AGS, so peek into the gallery below and let us know if these are a 100% definite purchase for you.

Lots of news about Jordan Brand packaging this week, as Monday brought news of an updated box and label for next year followed by a look at a super-limited promo box for the Air Jordan XI Retro ‘Concord’ crafted in wood and individually numbered. Today, it’s something a bit more directly related to the shoes themselves, or at least in terms of proximity. The Air Jordan X Retro ‘Chicago’ is shown off in advance of its January 21st release, now featuring not one but two new hangtags. One is a nice translucent ‘X’ in matte red with ‘Air Jordan Collection’ in its crux, the other a black Jumpman on one side and the Ten’s signature checkerboard lining pattern on the reverse. The blend together beautifully and raise the level of luxury on the first Air Jordan Retro for 2012 to unexpected heights. Other neumerals could obviously prove more difficult to render in this rather fetching design, but would you be psyched for future Jays to feature individualized renditions of what could be among the best wide-release hangtags ever released? Click through to see both sides of the black tag, let us know what you think and stick with Sneaker News for updates on the ‘Chicago’ Air Jordan 10. via Kicks-lab

There’s at least a couple of brand new Air Jordan X colorways coming up early in 2012, but we’d wager a majority of the attention surrounding upcoming AJX releases remains on one of the originals from 1995. The Air Jordan 10 Retro ‘Chicago’ is back but this time carries with it the same kind of checkerboard sockliner that appeared on the OG Steels and other original issues. This white, black and True Red edition, like all its City Series cohorts came out of the box back then with solid linings; does this change qualify as an upgrade or should all retros be presented exactly as they were upon debuting? It’s a choice you’ll have to make along with whether to get these and/or the ‘Old Royal’ edition, but either way, the ‘Chicago’ Air Jordan X remains the only thing Jordan Brand has ready for 2012 that’s already available early from mr_igotem937 on eBay.

Sneaker News recently posed a question to our readers: Which colorway of the Air Jordan X ‘City Series’ do you want to see a Retro of? The resounding answer was the ‘Chicago’ colorway, and given that this January 2012 release is a near copy of the original, we expect it to be one of the biggest hits of the year. A few changes to note: the inner lining features the checkerboard print (the OG was solid red) and the Jumpman symbol on the heel is red (the OG was solid black). Regardless of these changes, the Chicago version of the Air Jordan X is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated sneakers of the first quarter of the coming year. Are these a must-have for you? Check out the new images below and let us know after the jump. via soleawesome.

Can’t fit or afford the deadstock pair of ‘Seattles’ on eBay right now? Simply prefer the traditional Chicago-oriented aesthetics so intimately connected to the Air Jordan Legacy? Need a pair of Air Jordan X Retros in your life? You’re in luck, sneakerheads, as the AJ10 will return early next year after a nearly seven year hiatus. The Tens come back in style with the original ‘Chicago’ colorway slated to hit store shelves in January as what might be the single biggest drop of the month. They’re sure to sell out quickly but these also have a bit of sleeper appeal thanks to the fact that MJ didn’t play a full season or win a championship while wearing them, though they have a timeless design that helps to establish a link between the AJIXs and XIs. Check them out in greater detail after the jump and stick with Sneaker News for the exact US release date. via RMK
