Toward the conclusion of each pro sports season (and starting earlier every year, it would seem), pundits take their positions on whether a most valuable player is the single best talent in the league, the best player on the best team or some combination of the two. Now, there’s no questioning that Michael Jordan was the most brilliant baller of the 1995-96 season that saw his Chicago Bulls set the all-time mark for wins in a season, so if we’re talking about the greatest player on the greatest team ever, even the youngest among us understand why he’s still considered the GOAT. Extend the analogy to that season’s immortal Air Jordan XI and you might have an argument that this original ‘Bred’ colorway in which MJ grasped his fourth Larry O’Brien trophy (along with the scoring title, regular season, All-Star and Finals MVPs), is therefore the single greatest sneaker of all time. Not much needs to be said about this sneaker release. The most iconic colorway on a ground-breaking sneaker returns yet again, touching down on the final weekend before the big Holiday on December 25th. But is this sneaker the centerpiece of Jordan Brand’s Holiday 2012 roll-out? With the Kilroy Pack and the Air Jordan IV ‘Thunder’ creating a ton of buzz, the Bred XI might be ‘second chair’ in this season’s big-time shopping period. The biggest surprise regarding this December’s release of the Air Jordan XI Black/Red is that the special slide-out box tradition will come to an end. That’s a disappointment not felt by the size 7Y and under constituency because they’ve simply never experienced the superfluity of the special edition packaging or even the plastic shoe tree inserts. With that said, the upcoming Air Jordan XI ‘Bred’ in the GS size won’t be much of a surprise for the aforementioned small-footed Jordan fanatics, unless you can spot a discrepancy in this latest gallery of GS Bred XIs here. This December, Jordan Brand brings us full circle with the legendary championship-clenching colorway that capped off the greatest season of all time and started a Christmas tradition that keeps the memories as fresh as 1996. The Air Jordan XI Retro returns in the black and Varsity Red configuration in just under four months, arriving just about four years after the XI/XII Countdown Pack marked the completion of the sprawling Air Jordan Collezione Packages. Nike and Jordan Brand’s across-the-board price increases began right at the start of the new year, with Air Jordan Retro releases seeing a $10 price bump from $150 to $160. The December release of the Air Jordan XI will move up $5 to $185, so although the jump in dollars is actually half of what was expected, customers will receive a regular Jordan Brand box opposed to the special slide-out box set aside for the previous three Air Jordan XI releases. Of course, Jordan Brand does has the option to make a last-second audible and give the XI the packaging we all expected, but in the end, do we really ‘wear’ a box?
