Monta Ellis first grabbed our attention when he was spotted wearing the Air Jordan 8.0 during NBA Media Day last December. Formerly an athlete-representative of the brand AND1 (which has since deployed all of its NBA athletes to other brands), Monta’s apparent footwear freedom was something to keep an eye on, and it certainly paid off when he was spotted wearing the Air Jordan XI ‘Concord’ during a few games earlier this season. Over the weekend, he solidified his status as a sneaker free agent when he was seen wearing the Air Jordan XI ‘Space Jam’. Every time the XI makes an appearance on an NBA court, it certainly captures our attention, but this occurrence has us wondering if Monta has plans to repeat Gilbert Arenas’ dazzling display of sneakers from last season. “An homage…15 years later.”
Michael Jordan did great things for Nike Basketball and Jordan Brand, but his influence reached beyond the sport and touched on the lifestyle aspect of Nike footwear. The Air Jordan XI ‘Space Jam’ with the ’45′ on the heel is one of the rarest Air Jordan samples out there. While this pair of custom Space Jams aren’t exactly a direct Jordan Brand product, it still captures that rare-sample mystique. Here’s a look at a pair of 2009 Retro Space Jams with MJ’s ’45′ jersey number lasered on the upper ankle of the medial side of the shoes; the laser customs were done at the Jordan Brand Experience during the 2010 NBA All-Star Weekend, when Jordan fans were given the rare opportunity to add Jordan-centric laser-graphics on their items. The owner of these Space Jams got a bit creative and decided to add the ’45′ on this deadstock pair – an idea unlikely duplicated by anyone else! Michael Jordan’s supremacy doesn’t restrict itself to basketball. The brand that began with one sneaker (that was subsequently banned by the league) has spread its wings to football, baseball, motorsports, and even jazz (yes, there is a jazz musician signed onto Jordan Brand). Even if dribbling a basketball isn’t your M.O., chances are you’ve wanted to ‘be like Mike’ in one way or another. C.C. Sabathia is one of the few Jordan Brand athletes in Major League Baseball, and we’ve documented his Air Jordan Cleat PEs over the years – one of the more notable ones being the Space Jams that he’s worn during significant outings. What makes this PE different from most of the PE Cleats we’ve seen is that the cleated outsole features a Jumpman logo, opposed to the Swoosh seen on quite a few others. The Air Jordan XI has once against established itself as the premier Jordan Brand sneaker release of the year, and with the expected release of the Air Jordan XI ‘Concord’ in December causing excitement in the sneaker community around the world, the history of eleventh Air Jordan shoe elevates it beyond legacy and into the realm of divinity. Voted by our readers to be the greatest Air Jordan of all-time, the Air Jordan XI rocked the world of fashion and pop culture and catapulted the brand into cultural iconism, but we often forget that the beginnings of this shoe didn’t quite tie in to Michael’s greatest career moments. Michael Jordan first wore the Air Jordan XI during the second round of the 1995 NBA Playoffs, wearing the ‘Concord’ colorway before switching to the ‘Space Jam’ later in the series.
It was during that series that Michael decided to switch back from ’45′ to his original ’23′, but Michael still wore the Air Jordan XI Space Jam ’45′ Sample during Game 4 of that series, when the ‘Space Jam’ made its worldwide debut. Wait a second! Wasn’t the big Air Jordan XI Retro release for 2011 supposed to be the OG ‘Concord’ colorway from 1995?! For those of you who have your heart set on the original Elevens, this news has no bearing on what should figure to be Holiday 11′s single biggest release, though it is directly connected to the shoe that took that title two years ago. The Air Jordan XI ‘Space Jam’ was such a massive hit that they beat out Kanye West’s first Air Yeezys to top our Sneaker News Top 30 of 2009 and now they’re in even rarefied-er air now, thanks to a series of deadstock pairs soon to arrive at Asian retailer RMKstore. It’s pretty uncommon to see such a treasure trove available from a retailer so long after the original (instant sell-out) release, and although their site has no indication of price or quantities yet, you can inquire with them here regarding info and placing a reservation. If you’re still looking for a pair and dont want to go the overseas route, you can check to see what the market says they’re worth and grab a pair on eBay.

Wiz Khalifa was spotted out and about with his beau Amber Rose, visiting Katsuya restaurant in Los Angeles, CA. The Pittsburgh native, who thrust onto the mainstream with his ‘Black & Yellow’ single and released a debut album with Atlantic Records this past March, wore the #1 Sneaker of 2009 – the Air Jordan XI ‘Space Jam’. Quite a big step from his last Sneaker News Celebrity Feet report, as Wiz kept it much simpler with black/white Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars. MTV began filming of the fourth season of Jersey Shore not long ago, and cast-member Ronnie already garnered attention in the gossip spotlight as he was allegedly involved in fisticuffs with fellow house-mate ‘The Situation’. While Ronnie’s character has been under heat, he’s also been in heat, because he’s enjoying his time in Florence rocking some sweet Air Jordans. Ronnie’s been seen wearing general release Nikes and Jordans during the first seasons, but he’s apparently been bit by the Air Jordan bug because so far, he’s been rocking the Air Jordan XI (both Space Jam and Concord), the Air Jordan VII Bordeaux, Air Jordan XIII from the Collezione Package, the Air Jordan IX Citrus, and even threw in some Infrared Spiz’ikes.
