Following our feature of the Air Jordan IV ‘Military’ just an hour ago is a clear look at the Air Jordan XII ‘Obsidian’; this late-June release finishes of a triplet of Air Jordan XII releases that began with the original ‘Playoffs’ colorway and the all-new Cool Grey/Team Orange hat hit stores this past Saturday. We’ve got nearly a month left before these even begin popping up in stores, so the debate of whether or not to pass on these should pop up considering the slew of big-ticket releases slated to hit from now until then (South Beach LeBrons, Yeezy 2s, etc.). Need a reason to cop these? These are one of the very few un-Retro’ed Air Jordans left in the entire catalog (of course, that changes in the U.S. come June 23rd. More shots of this upcoming release after the jump, so take a look and let us know your decision on these.

Our recent ‘On the Fence’ look at the ‘Cool Grey’ Air Jordan 12 suggests Jordanheads are looking toward others from this insanely packed summer full of heat. Among those ‘distracting’ other drops is another of this summer’s AJXII Retros, but not just any old combination of colors. This is one that we’ve been waiting for over fifteen years to see in stores again, so don’t be surprised when the ‘Obsidian’ Air Jordan XII Retro is gone just as soon as it’s resurrected. This June 23rd release is indeed the spot-on OG reproduction we’ve been craving, although the metal eyelets aren’t so much ‘metal’, but a coated plastic. Click through for more shots, let us know where these rank on your list of summer sneaker shopping priorities and cop in over a month in advance from mmehanna on eBay.

As the summer release schedule continually grows more crowded, we’re reminded of an Air Jordan XII Retro that’s been waiting in the wings for over fifteen years. So even with all the ‘Gold Medal’ and otherwise Olympic attention of late, the ‘Obsidian’ Air Jordan 12 is awaited with equal anticipation, one of the increasingly rare never-retroed Jays and a design that’s really just too beautiful to keep locked up for too much longer. Grainy Obsidian and pebbled white leathers make for a spectacularly clean two-toned look and the select University Blue accents remind us that Jordan was doing the tonal thing long before it was a widespread trend. Yet another case of Tinker’s timeless design shining through on a supremely wearable colorway, the Obsidian Twelves are coming up in June and this Grade School edition gives us a closer look after the jump below. Stalley rocked his Playoffs long before the release, and before they’re even scheduled for an official release, it looks like he’s already moved “on to the next one”. Stalley was the guest of honor at 106 & Park recently, performing live and chatting with hosts Rocsi Diaz and Terrence J while wearing the Air Jordan XII ‘Obsidian’, which is currently set for a June release, and a complete Supreme-d out top and on bottom with his customer Cleveland cap. The aforementioned host Terrence J also brought out some kicks, wearing the Jordan Son Of Mars ‘Pop Art’ to match his simple outfit. More on Stalley below, so take a look and let us know what you think! Photos: BET

Is there a more perfect date than June 23rd for an Air Jordan Retro release? Coming just after the end of a gruelling school year, a late June drop also signals the end of the NBA season, and for Michael Jordan during 1996-97, that also meant the fifth of six championship rings. Coming up this June on ‘his’ day will be the only one of the five OG Air Jordan XII colorways MJ never wore, the Obsidian and white AJ12 whose French and University Blue accents remind us that tonal designs are timeless, even if the majority of sneaker releases only discovered this in recent years. We’ve been waiting fifteen years for this utterly timeless style to earn a retro release, and with some Korean shops already moving their stock, the June 23rd release date feels even closer. A detailed viewing courtesy of IST below, so take a look, and if you can’t wait the two months, cop ‘em now on eBay.

Our latest piece of Sneaker News gives the spotlight to a shoe whose official name guarantees that only those lady sneakerheads who can fit into its grade school sizes might have been around the last and only time this model was released. The Air Jordan XII Retro GS ‘Obsidian’ takes us fifteen years back to a year when the NBA had its players suit up in their teams’ individual jerseys a la Major League Baseball instead of going with the traditional East blue/West red. So even though Michael Jordan never wore these in a game, they have an interesting story all the same, the visual component of which chronicled in additional images below. Photos: Air-Randy

Come June, you can cross off the ‘Obsidian’ colorway of the Air Jordan XII from the list of ‘OG Air Jordans yet to be retroed‘. That list is getting shorter and shorter every year, but a release so popular like the Obsidian XII is worth it to break open the vault once more. The last time two occasions the Obsidian XII was in stores, it came in Force Fusion and Low-top form, so while those two releases were popular in their own right, neither comes close to the original. This first detailed look at the GS version of the Obsidian should give you a great idea of what to expect for the mens sizes as well, but we’ll keep you updated on those as well. What are you waiting for? Peep the gallery now! Photos via marqueesole

Michael Jordan wore the ‘Columbia’ Air Jordan XI en route to the MVP award at the 1996 NBA All-Star Game in Phoenix, and given the recent history of Jordan Brand holiday releases, it seems all but guaranteed that we’ll either see those or the ‘Bred’ edition retroed as this Christmas’ can’t-miss retro. MJ Likely would have picked a similarly ‘off’ colorway for the following year’s ASG in Clevland, but the NBA’s choice to employ an MLB-style BYO-uniform dress code resulted in the more natural match being to the eventual ‘Playoffs’ colorway of the Air Jordan XII. That means that the OG ‘Obsidian’ AJXII went down as one of the most overlooked first-run colorways from the championship era Air Jordan Legacy, and this general lack of attention is reflected by the lack of a retro some fifteen years after its February 1997 debut. But that all changes this summer, when the Air Jordan 12 Retro ‘Obsidian’ makes good on the promise of a low-cut version we got back in ’04 and makes a Saturday, June 23rd release date one of the best graduation presents a Jordanhead could ever have. Click through for some more images and let us know which is your all-time most desired OG Air Jordan colorway, and be sure to stick with Sneaker News for updates.
