They’re historically overshadowed because of a certain sick performance where Michael Jordan not only beat the Utah Jazz, but also food poisoning, but don’t forget that it was an Air Jordan XII original colorway other than the ‘Flu Game’ edition that MJ wore to capture the crown. The Air Jordan 12 Retro ‘Playoffs’ have dropped once since their 1997 debut, this latest run following up on a 2004 release that has each generation placed about an equal distance apart on the timeline. We still don’t have an official word on whether these will beat the ‘Obsidian’ OG or the new ‘Cool Grey’ AJXII to retail in 2012, but an increased frequency of previews while the others stay more mysterious suggests these would be the pack leader, perhaps right in time for this year’s NBA postseason. 2012 marks the fifteenth anniversary of most of the original Air Jordan XII colorways, and true to form, Jordan Brand will offer something of a celebration with a couple of Retros and at least one brand new colorup. Aside from the ‘Flu Game’ colorup that was honored with a special variant just a couple years back, this Air Jordan 12 Retro ‘Playoffs’ edition is likely the most memorable for the majority of sneakerheads, owing both to MJ wearing them while capturing his fifth NBA Championship as well as the image from those 1997 Playoffs appropriated for the cover of NBA2K10. The OG ‘Obsidians’ and a new ‘Cool Grey’ pair will join the recently previewed Air Jordan XII Clave and Runner lifestyle looks, so which one(s) will you choose next year? We’ve got some new pics of the Playoff 12s to show you after the jump, so check them out and stick with Sneaker News for the US release date. via SoleWings

The modern sneaker scene offers more retro releases than any other point in history, but there are times when the choices of what’s available seem a bit confusing. For example, the Air Jordan XII ‘Taxi’ is a beloved design, and it’s one that translates well to a lowtop variant, but some sneakerheads wondered why we got another ‘Taxi’ Low this spring when they’d already dropped back in 2003, while some of the OG Twelves still sit on the shelves. But that’ll change next year as we get three of the five originals including the ‘Bulls’ and ‘Obsidians’, along with this pair that was retroed in early ’04 and recently graced the cover of NBA2K10, the Air Jordan XII Retro ‘Playoffs’. This is the shoe in which Michael Jordan closed out the 1997 NBA Finals in Chicago after a heroic performance in Utah wearing the ‘other’ postseason XII that’ll forever be known as the ‘Flu Game’. These arguably have a better lifestyle appeal thanks to white instead of red mudguards paired with their black full grain leather uppers, but with the Obsidian pair also coming soon with the same blocking pattern, will you even be able to choose between them?! If you’ve been around the fashion and/or footwear scene for long enough, you’re bound to have heard someone somewhere exclaim some calendar as “The Year of . . . “ A recent example could be ‘The Year of (Cool) Grey’, with this neutral shade becoming even hotter than we could have ever expected during this post-recession era, thanks in no small part to last year’s blockbuster Air Jordan XI Retro. It’s a model that people grew to love for its groundbreaking style and connection with MJ’s storybook first comeback, and one that’s held to similarly high esteem is its immediate successor, the Air Jordan 12. Looks like ’12 is going to be the year of XIIs, at least when it comes to summer when the ‘Taxis’, ‘Obsidians’ and ‘Playoffs’ combine to set a record for most OG colorways of a single AJ Legacy model retroed in a single quarter. Needless to say this is a huge development and along with word of a brand new Cool Grey, white and Team Orange model to be unveiled soon, it’s news that will have many sneakerheads absolutely giddy.
