For as long as we can remember, sneaker releases have been accompanied by catchy nicknames to the point where these monikers are now the accepted terms in identifying the shoes. There are the newer terms to the sneaker vocabulary, like ‘South Beach’ from the LeBron series or ‘Grinch’ on the Kobe, but there are those that have been long-lasting like ‘He Got Game’, which has been in heavy and exclusive use for the upcoming Air Jordan XIII release. For that release in particular, the nickname has been around since the Spike Lee film first released in 1998 – a film that might be older than some of the sneakerheads who are planning to buy the shoes on the March 16th release date.
This Air Jordan XIII colorway originally released in 1997 and was actually the only Air Jordan XIII colorway to release that year (all other original colorways dropped in 1998). In the movie, Jake Shuttlesworth (played by Denzel Washington), a prison inmate, gets sent on a mission to convince the convict’s son, a star High School basketball player, to play for the warden’s alma mater in exchange for a shorter sentence. One iconic scene of the film features Jake shopping for a pair of kicks, and without hesitation, he requests the new Air Jordans to which he is presented with the Air Jordan XIII. From then on this colorway adopted the ‘He Got Game’ nickname; the trend resurfaced when the shoes retroed for the first time in 2008, and picked up yet again when the release was confirmed for 2013.
There are a few scenes in the film in which the sneakers as a whole take center stage, like when his son Jesus (played by Ray Allen) points them out, and when Jake and Jesus battle in one last game of one-on-one. The movie itself is a star-studded line-up of actors, NBA stars, and iconic kicks, so there’s no doubt that ‘He Got Game’ is among the must-watch films for sneaker hobbyists. Check below for these scenes and if there’s a shoe nickname you’re not quite sure of, drop a comment with a request and it might get featured on the next segment of Origins of a Nickname.

One week ago, Sneaker News scooped you on a special event at SoleFly in Miami celebrating the upcoming release of the ‘He Got Game’ Air Jordan XIII Retro with the man who played lead character Jesus Shuttlesworth in that Spike Lee film. SoleFly was the first to get the Thirteens celebrating Ray Allen‘s three-point record a couple of years back; now that he’s moved from the Celtics to the hometown Heat, the perks are even more pronounced. The ‘Ray Got Game’ Air Jordan 13 adds special laser etching to the suede mudguard area, with the fonts closely matching the movie promo materials and boutique logo on the left and right, respectively. There are just 30 pairs of these and even fewer with Allen’s golden signature, so have a closer look below and let us know if you’re ready for the HGG XIIIs.

The second Air Jordan XIII release of 2013 takes us back nearly sixteen years to the first colorway issued. The ‘He Got Game’ XIIIs were Michael’s weapon of choice for home games during his final season with the Chicago Bulls, but earned their nickname from the Spike Lee joint that made its silver screen debut around the same time His Airness switched to playoff black. Spike Lee struck again when he displayed these Air Jordan XIIIs as the object of Jake Shuttlesworth’s affection in the film ‘He Got Game’. Denzel’s character, fresh out of prison on a mission to convert his son’s college hoops decision, cops the Air Jordan XIII and wear them proudly throughout the film, so the ‘He Got Game’ moniker followed suit not long after. These were in fact part of the Collezione Package of 2008 (some consider this the best behind the XI/XIII Pack as it brought back two un-retroed Jays), but you can have them as a solo act this March. More of the Air Jordan XIII ‘He Got Game’ is just below.

On May 1st, 1998, Spike Lee introduced ‘He Got Game’, starring Denzel Washington, a young Ray Allen, and a slew of other stars in Hollywood and the NBA. The 136-minute long flick featured a sick library of the hottest sneakers of the late 90′s, like the Pearl Foamposites, the Air Uptempo ’97, and the Air Jordan XIII in White/Black/Red, which eventually took on the ‘He Got Game’ nickname. This March 16th, Jordan Brand will re-release the Air Jordan XIII that arrived as part of the Collezione Package in 2008, ending the Spring 2013 Jordan Brand Retro output on a high note. The Air Jordan XIII ‘Bred’ was the first of the original colorways from Michael Jordan’s thirteenth signature signature to make a comeback lap in 2013. All signs are pointing to the Air Jordan XIII ‘He Got Game’ being the next up. The pair goes heavier on the leather than the aforementioned ‘Bred’, with the dimpled panels up top skipping on on the mesh treatment for something smoother. Continue reading for a complete preview of the ‘He Got Game’ Air Jordan XIII and stick with Sneaker News for the first word when we pin down a more precise release date for this 2013 retro.
