AIR YEEZY 2
The Air Yeezy 2 is the second signature Nike shoe for Kanye West. The two known colorways are the Pure Platinum/Wolf Grey and Black/Solar Red both of which arrived to much excitement and fervor in June of 2012.

Perhaps one of the most painstaking releases in Nike history was the Nike Air Yeezy 2 in 2012. Some may postulate that Nike’s Twitter RSVP system was created just to counter the seemingly limitless crowds that would undoubtedly show at storefronts, and although independently owned shops did not employ their own “Twitter RSVP”, Nike did encourage each store to use a raffle-style release in order to minimize the camp-out craze. Two colorways of the Air Yeezy 2 came and went, and considering the original Air Yeezy released in three versions, many believed that a third Air Yeezy 2 colorway was in the works – especially with that curious “Kobe” colorway in purple/red/volt still swimming around the net and Gentry Humphrey himself coolly mentioned that “things are still in the works”. With that said, the excitement around the Air Yeezy 2 has never waned, but recent events have propelled this discussion topic back to the surface. Tonight’s topic on What Do You Think?: What could the release of the red Nike Air Yeezy 2 colorway mean for the sneaker game and how will it go down?

With the Air Jordan III outsole in use for the original Air Yeezy, some guessed that the Yeezy 2 would feature the bottom base of the Air Jordan IV. In retrospect, an Air Jordan IV outsole on the Air Yeezy 2 would’ve worked out amazingly, with this custom pair of IVs-turned-Ye giving us some insight as to how it would’ve turned out. Check out the gallery of this custom job done by Noldo below, and if you’re interested in purchasing, these are up for grabs from fallenangelv6 on eBay.

For better or worse, 2012 was a defining year for the sneaker world and all that it encompasses. It was a year that saw certain shoes throw the laws of supply and demand so out of whack, that brands and retailers had to completely rethink the way they sell shoes to the public just to keep the peace. If you were willing to put in some legwork or, better yet, had the right connections, it was a banner year for sneaker enthusiasts. “Must-have” releases seemed to be at an all-time high and nearly every weekend offered up some sort of temptation for consumers. 2012 saw the release of some of the most eagerly anticipated and passionately sought-after sneakers the game had ever seen and it’s safe to say that things will never be the same again.
In between those, there were plenty of other desirable targets along the way, from the special limited editions and collaborations to beloved Retro returns and promising new designs and innovations. There were even a few certified sleeper hits that organically carved out their place among the year’s best releases. Due to an exponentially expanding consumer base and a heightened level of product awareness, you might not have been able to get your hands on every shoe you hunted for in 2012, but there was certainly no shortage of solid alternatives ripe for the picking in their absence.

Is this where all the Nike Air Yeezy 2 pairs went? Did the celebrity set gobble them up only to have us commoners forlornly staring at the astronomical eBay prices? Realistically no, as they make up a pretty small subset of the overall shoe consuming population, but it certainly seems like a good number of famous folk felt like they couldn’t live without ‘em. With that being said you had to figure Justin Bieber would pop up in them eventually-he’s had his sneakerhead moments before, plus the overall design is in line with his tendency towards higher-cut models. Click through with us to see Justin Bieber on stage out in Japan rocking the Nike Air Yeezy 2 “Pure Platinum” and don’t hesitate to let us know in the comments below if you think he did them justice. Has the excitement of the Air Yeezy 2 subsided yet? According to one t-shirt designer, not quite. Here’s a look at an Air Yeezy 2 t-shirt designed ‘all-over’ style, which should serve as a throwback to the late-2000′s era of similarly designed t-shirts; it’s got the Wolf Grey/Pure Platinum Yeezy 2s in a cascade of re-prints that spill over the edges of the sleeves, neck, and waist, but the design is rather demure compared to the asking price, which sits at a price tag of $90,300. It’s certainly a ‘What The Yeezy?’ as any other, but the seller notes that his price is negotiable because he will entertain ‘best offers’. Obviously, 90k for a unofficial Nike t-shirt is too high to be taken seriously, but the creator of the t-shirt, Wilfry, also made a recent splash for his ‘Art by Art Jacobs’ t-shirt, which became one of the more humorous stories in urban fashion circles a few months ago. More of this Yeezy 2 t-shirt below, and let us know what your true appraisal value of this t-shirt is and if you’d cop with a workable pricetag!

Kim Kardashian may not be a sneakerhead, but her ‘shoe’ game is serious. We’re not talking Nikes and Jordans, but high-end Choos and Louboutins that, in terms of retail price, blow any sneaker out of the water. So Kim K has certainly established a geniune appreciation for footwear, but it’s only recently that she’s getting into sneakers – perhaps Yeezy did in fact instruct her properly. She was recently spotted with the Black/Solar Red Yeezy Deux in a similarly all-black get-up (she might’ve borrowed Kanye’s leggings too) while strolling around town, so it seems she’s giving kicks a priority over heeled shoes lately. Check out more of Kim below and let us know if you think she deserves legitimate consideration as a ‘sneakerhead’. Photos: upscalehype

Looking at the Nike Air Yeezy 1 and the just released Nike Air Yeezy 2 side by side, it’s immediately evident that they come from the same lineage. The obvious similarities in shape, the mid-foot strap treatment, and the whole glow in the dark opulence lying underneath set up a clear bridge between these two entrances into the high end of collaborative Nike models. The climates the respective models arrived in weren’t quite so similar however, as the sneakerhead landscape changed quite a bit from the short span of the 2009 release of the first to last weekend’s debut of the second. Similarly the release approach was much more traditional, lineups and the occasional raffle here and there, where the second was forced to adjust after the looming threats on public safety posed by the ‘Galaxy’ business just a few months back.
The Nike Air Yeezy 1 was a bit more insular, a release seemingly driven to a much larger extent by the core sneakerhead crowd rather than the media at large. There was no heavy celebrity seeding (and obviously, no celebrity ‘Tweeting’ of their early pairs), no extensive CNN coverage building up to the moment, no fake $90,000+ auctions. Furthermore Kanye West himself was a bit of a different character back then, with the Nike Air Yeezy 1 more rooted in a history of sports footwear where the 2′s reflect his quick switch to the high-fashion houses right after, a trend played out in his lyrics and his on-going creative endeavors (recall the Louis Vuitton Pack that allegedly had Nike fuming).
Which of these two similar colorways of two separate sneakers in the Kanye West x Nike oeuvre will history be more kind to? At the moment the Nike Air Yeezy 2 ‘Black/Solar’ is a hotter commodity, with prices hovering around $2,000 on eBay whereas the ‘Black/Pink’ Nike Air Yeezy 1 only rose to that figure over the span of three years, but it will take some time before things level out and we can collectively look at them from a distance. There’s no doubt the sentimental attachment and historical signifance of the Nike Air Yeezy 1 will be unmatched for many, but there’s also the consideration of the Nike Air Yeezy 2 being that much harder to track down and arriving with a fervor much greater than before. We’re finishing off our 1 vs. 2 comparisons here with a detailed look at the Black/Pink and Black/Solar Red, so enjoy the gallery and let us know which of the two you like better!
