The Air Yeezy 2 is the second signature shoe of Kanye West. The two known colorways is the Pure Platinum/Wolf Grey and Black/Solar Red; the first release of the Pure Platinum/Wolf Grey colorway is currently rumored for June 2012.
Sneaker News readers voted the Nike Air Yeezy 2 as the most anticipated sneaker release of 2012 in our year-end Sneaker News Reader’s Choice Poll, beating out the two blockbuster Air Jordan Retros by significant margins. That notion still remains, but it’s becoming a difficult task to track the progress of the Air Yeezy 2 with Nike keeping such a tight lid on the project. This past Friday, Sneaker News was provided some information regarding a third colorway of the Nike Air Yeezy 2, but it appears that for now, just two colorways will release – the Black/Solar Red, which has been on Kanye’s feet over the last few months, and the Wolf Grey/Pure Platinum, commonly referred to as the ‘Zen Grey’. Another significant piece of information is that the rumored release of March 23rd is looking to be unlikely, with the release rumored to be pushed back to a later date (but not far after). Over the last few years, we’ve noticed an evolution in Kanye West’s personal style, going from streetwear brands to a more luxury ‘high-end’ type of urban apparel. What hasn’t wavered is his love for sneakers, and as one of the most influential tastemakers and sneakerheads of our generation, the partnership between ‘Ye and Nike has produced the most sought after sneakers of the decade – the Nike Air Yeezy. While we’ve seen clear looks at the Air Yeezy 2 over the last few months, we have yet to finalize solid release information – but as long as we keep seeing them out in public, we can at least hope a release in imminent (currently rumored for March 23rd). Kanye West was recently spotted at London Fashion Week wearing the Nike Air Yeezy 2 in the ‘Zen Grey’ colorway; he matched it with his two-toned denim outfit, a bright green sweater, and a healthy helping of gold chains around his neck. Jay-Z has built a reputation of giving special attention to the sneakers he loves, which is why he’s been spotted in Black/Cement IIIs and Air Jordan 1s rather frequently (that’s a solid and concise rotation, is it not?). It seems like the Air Yeezy 2 cracked his exclusive list, because he’s been spotted again with the Yeezys while sitting courtside at the Kentucky vs. Louisville game on Friday. Sports fans may remember that he was under a bit of heat by the NBA for being in the Wildcats’ locker-room after their Final Four clinching back in March, but this time around, he played nice by remaining in the stands and probably won’t be fined by the NBA. Just last night Sneaker News broke the news of a possible Nike Air Yeezy 3 in its beginning stages, as Kanye West mysteriously tweeted his desire to ‘sketch’ the Nike Air Yeezy 3. While this news is rather exciting, we still don’t know much about the Nike Air Yeezy 2, except that the tentative release date is currently set at March 23, 2012, and that the group of people who are known to have the Yeezy 2s in their possession is rather exclusive. You can add Kanye’s ‘big brother’ to that list, as Jay-Z was spotted sitting courtside at last night’s Nets/Hawks game wearing the Air Yeezy 2 in the Black/Pink colorway. The Yeezy 2 is apparently a hot courtside-Feet item for the Watch The Throne stars as Kanye West was also seen wearing the Yeezy 2 during the Christmas Day game between the Lakers and Heat. One of the biggest stories this past week was the rumored release date of the Nike Air Yeezy 2, which is tentatively set to touch down on March 23rd, 2012. However, we still haven’t seen detailed shots of the Air Yeezy 2 until now, and the luxurious materials and design should make these as successful (or maybe more than) the original Nike Air Yeezy. The Black/Pink/Mint colorway features a premium croc-skin material on the upper with a molded heel (possibly Foamposite?) with a rugged nylon material with suede material foxing. On the medial side is a suede midfoot strap housing as well. The midsole features a combination of black and mint green with a translucent mint green outsole (with the construction borrowed from the Air Tech Challenge II). The idiom ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ certainly applies to the Air Yeezy 2 design, as it utilizes similar design formula used in the original. If you’re an executive of the label that helped make Kanye West the international hip-hop/urban culture/fashion icon he is today, expect some great gifts. Shawn ‘Pecas’ Costner, an executive of Def Jam, just showed off his Grey/Red pair of the Nike Air Yeezy 2, given to him by Kanye West. Thus far, we haven’t seen the Air Yeezy 2 on the feet of anyone else, but Pecas’ fruitful relationship with Kanye deserves him so nice hook-ups! The upper of this new colorway features numerous tones of grey with a red inner lining and a mint green outsole – similar to that of the Black/Pink Air Yeezy 2 that we’ve seen quite a lot of. We also have a closer look at the tongue, which uses an enlarged diamond-mesh material, and the mid-foot strap harness on the medial side, which is decorated by triangular details. Slack-jawed downward gaze? Check. Form-fitting black leather pants? Check. Nike Air Yeezy 2 in black and pink? Check. We’ve come to expect this kind of look from Kanye West of late, the latest Mr. West spotting bringing together his aloof-looking daytime swag with a lower half that’s been with him on stage at the Watch the Throne Tour shows these past couple weeks. The reaction of attendees to the Jay-Z x Kanye West ‘Watch The Throne’ tour can be summed up with one word: Unreal. The most buzzworthy hip-hop concert tour of the last decade continues tonight at Madison Square Garden in New York City – the second show in two days – and keen-eyed concert-goers will probably see Kanye wearing the Air Yeezy 2 in the Black/Pink colorway.
