nike air tech challenge ii cultural history Irreverence Justified: The Cultural History of the Nike Air Tech Challenge II

The BBC described Andre Agassi as “perhaps the biggest worldwide star in [tennis] history,” upon his retirement in 2006. That trusted British media outlet could have removed the ‘perhaps’ and it would have ruffled fewer feathers than Agassi’s rebellious image did, flying in the face of tennis traditions. Andre’s impact extends beyond the game whose once rigid dress code he all but destroyed, into one of the defining looks of that golden age of the late ’80s/early ’90s.

It looks like Nike has officially re-joined with one of their most celebrated athletes of old in Andre Agassi. The partnership between them and the wild-haired tennis star will focus on “a shared passion for tennis, along with a commitment to help kids become more active and realize their full potential through sports.” And while that initial bit of info seems to exclude a revival of the classic Andre Agassi branded Nike footwear, we can certainly dream that Nike has something in the works. Classics Revisited: Nike Air Tech Challenge III (1990)

nike air tech challenge iii 1990 Classics Revisited: Nike Air Tech Challenge III (1990)

Tennis shoes have been the same boring white leather-based designs – it’s not wonder that sneakers in general are referred to as “tennis shoes”. To up-end the conventions of bland tennis shoes, Nike flipped on a switch with tennis fashion and created the most out-of-the-box line of tennis sport footwear in history, rebelling against convention of decades-long design. Of course, the right athlete was needed to fit the fresh bill, and Andre Agassi with his cut-off shorts, long and curly locks, and colorful headbands was the perfect man to introduce the Air Tech Challenge series and the wild colors and logos.

In 1990, Nike unveiled this outstanding White/Black-Hot Lime-Neon Teal colorway of Air Tech Challenge for Andre Agassi, spawning the Challenge Court line of matching athletic apparel that signified Agassi’s specific style as more than just shoes and basic apparel, but a complete package of distinct fashion sense. In fact, Agassi himself took his own style seriously and chose to sit out Wimbledon in 1990 as the tournament enforced a strict all-white dress code. The Air Tech Challenge III was among several models that gave away to a slew of other unique Tennis designs built around Nike’s innovations, like the Huarache and neoprene bootie construction. Nike Air Tech Challenge IV – OG Pair on eBay

nike air tech challenge iv 0 Nike Air Tech Challenge IV OG Pair on eBay

To match to colorful and eccentic nature of tennis star Andre Agassi, Nike Training hooked him up with one of the most revered signature lines in its footwear history. The Nike Air Tech Challenge 3/4 line features some of the most insane color designs of all-time, but it also featured some key design points to fit Agassi’s on-court game, like the Durathane forefoot that lasted longer than conventional soles, and a Dynamic Fit inner sleeve for fitted comfort. This particular model is commonly referred to as the Air Tech Challenge IV (long after Nike started to give numeric designations to its sneakers), but if you consider yourself a Nike Trainer aficionado, you’ll be no problem telling one and the other part. What makes the ATC IV such a standout is its explosion of color on the heel as well as airbrushed gradient on the midsole, but peep the upper and you’ll absolutely no sign of a ‘swoosh’ logo (replaced by a rare ‘NIKE’ label instead). This colorway here is of course of the original three that dropped back in the day (the Black/Purple and the Black/White/Teal being the other two joints), so act fast because these bad boys might disappear sooner than you think, since they never did re-release. We’ve got a detailed gallery for you below, so take a good look and visit the auction¬†from identitiesrevealed on eBay.
