In recent years, the Asics Gel Saga II has given itself to numerous collaborations, most in conjunction with retailers or their leaders. Here’s a case where you can’t help but see a tie in with another pop cornerstone beloved by the cultured and fashionable, one whose long film history befits the name ‘saga’. This ‘Kill Bill’ Gel Saga II is a can’t miss colorway in bright yellow plus black and a bit of blood red splatter on the midsole, but add in the memory of Uma Thurman channeling Bruce Lee with a sequel supposedly right around the corner and this becomes one of those gotta-have GRs. It’s amazing what the right selection of patterns can do for a sneaker. Asics should know that by now by looking at the super strong reaction garnered by the upcoming Asics Gel Lyte III “Print Pack”. Also featuring the printed look, albeit to a scaled back degree, is this October 2013 version of the Asics Gel Saga II. The sneaker sports a covert camo touch on the insole, a detail that we will also seen on the Asics Gel Lyte III later on this year. The Spring 2013 releases of the Asics runners like the Gel Saga II and Gel Lyte III proves rather quickly and easily that the popular of these models is rooted in the design and not the hype. Every release has been impressive without question, and this latest arrival of the Black/Mint with a grey/black speckled midsole proves that the inline designs are likely to disappear quickly from shelves like the limited collabos and the like. There aren’t too many US sneaker shops able to pull down Asics collaborations at the moment. The still-young BAIT has already landed themselves on that list though, releasing the sizable “Rings Pack” last year. In 2013 they’ve got even more on that in the form of this clean Asics Gel Saga II getup. Yes that’s the Asics Gel Saga II-a name that even Asics seems to be straying away from as the box tags as of late skip out on that crucial designation of this silo as a sequel. For better or worse, 2012 was a defining year for the sneaker world and all that it encompasses. It was a year that saw certain shoes throw the laws of supply and demand so out of whack, that brands and retailers had to completely rethink the way they sell shoes to the public just to keep the peace. If you were willing to put in some legwork or, better yet, had the right connections, it was a banner year for sneaker enthusiasts. “Must-have” releases seemed to be at an all-time high and nearly every weekend offered up some sort of temptation for consumers. 2012 saw the release of some of the most eagerly anticipated and passionately sought-after sneakers the game had ever seen and it’s safe to say that things will never be the same again.
In between those, there were plenty of other desirable targets along the way, from the special limited editions and collaborations to beloved Retro returns and promising new designs and innovations. There were even a few certified sleeper hits that organically carved out their place among the year’s best releases. Due to an exponentially expanding consumer base and a heightened level of product awareness, you might not have been able to get your hands on every shoe you hunted for in 2012, but there was certainly no shortage of solid alternatives ripe for the picking in their absence.

Uma Thurman’s precision sword weilding injected the Mexico 66 with a bit of the testosterone it had lost as an early ’00s emo staple, so with another Kill Bill film on tap for the near future, it’s hard to see a yellow and black Asics classic and not think of Beatrix Kiddo. Codename ‘Black Mamba’ offed her foes in a style borrowed from Bruce Lee and their themes have since merged into a murderous look inspiring Kobe Bryant’s and other Nikes over the past few years. Seeing blood red splattering on the midsole of this 2013 Asics Gel Saga II makes you wonder if Quentin Tarantino’s eagerly anticipated follow-up has already made its first splash, so stick with Sneaker News to see if this turns out to be a collaboration (even if it’s unlikely given KB3′s ’14 ETA and the likelihood that date gets pushed back), and check out some more shots below in the meantime.

It’s a little ironic isn’t it, that these foreign born collabo Asics pairs end up being a little bit more wider spread in the states than those cooked up on these shores (with Ronnie Fieg being the only American in recent memory to get his hands on the classics catalog). As promised, the above pictured Foot Patrol x Asics Gel Saga II will indeed be making its way into the world beyond the doors of that UK shop, with a good number of American shops hosting the release this Saturday, October 13th. While US sneakerheads were going stark raving mad over the Air Jordan XI Retro ‘Concord’ release this past week, the Euro scene shifted its attention to Amsterdam where the boutique that topped many best-of 2010 lists issued their latest collaboration with a brand whose recent resurgence they can be seen to have sparked a couple years back. The Patta x Asics Gel Saga release represented the rise of both of these brands’ status to cult heroes within certain corners of the sneaker scene, with a large yet peaceful queue starting some two days before the December 22nd drop and building up to an instant sellout that also included some dual-branded winter gloves for the lucky ones in attendance.
