There are a few things we’ve come to expect from the Ronnie Fieg collabos with Asics. Among those are: top-notch suede, release day madness, and indulgent photo shoots. With the official release date of the ‘Mazarine Blue’ Asics Gel Saga II right around the corner (following the Kithstrike drop last week), Fieg has let go an extra batch of images for his final pair of 2011, featuring Norwegian model, Siri Blomquist. Ronnie Fieg has never worked for or with Nike, but there’s a clear Swoosh inspiration in this latest release. Not only did Ronnie Fieg serve as a guest designer for this new Asics Gel Saga II in the collaborative style Nike helped make central to the modern sneaker landscape, but the ‘Mazarine Blue’ Gel Saga II was also released in a pattern we’ve seen eminating from Beaverton. First off, the #kithstrike surprise release of 100 pairs Tuesday morning is both in name and practice quite similar to Nike’s Quickstrike drops, and as has been the case in several of the more popular pairs in recent years, that super-limited debut won’t be the last we’ll hear from this pair. In fact, the bulk of ‘Mazarine Blue’ Gel Sagas will still be available when they arrive at Kith NYC on December 29th, 200 of the 300-pair limited run still up for grabs. Is Asics the reigning king of sneaker collaborations? In terms of sheer volume, no one can match Nike’s network of guest stars, but when it comes to a brand expertly utilizing the services of designers who capture the imagination of the sneakerhead scene with both reputation and quality, no brand has come further in the past few years than the Onitsuka Tiger. Coming off a string of hot Gel Lyte IIIs crafted by Ronnie Fieg as well as the most recent in-house standout comes another old school runner that might be looking to toss its hat into the regularly-releasing ring. The Asics Gel Saga II is ready with two new colorways for next January, one a whited-out take on a grey OG colorway and another original with an undeniable similarity to the upcoming Patta collab. It’s safe to say that next month will be as significant to Asics as December has been/will be for Jordan Brand; will Asics fans jump on the chance to get their kicks early, too, thanks to a pre-order currently available from Hanon?

You know your readership is truly global when minutes after offering a possible explanation for the X insignias all over the Patta x Asics Gel Saga II, readers chime in to fill in the details for their hometown. Before any such assertion from the Dutch boutique themselves, Sneaker News readers informed the world that the ‘XXX’ motif on the tongue and laces of Patta’s latest collaboration correspond to Amsterdam’s official coat of arms, a design that can also be seen to lend its black and red sections to this shoe’s aggressive colorway. All of these details in conjunction with a crazy range of materials makes for one of the year’s most interesting guest spots, and now that we have a full look at the Gel Saga II, it’s only a matter of time before we know the release date. Three Xs in one spot has a variety of pointed connotations, ranging from bowling a turkey to that quirky sheep ad currently running on Hulu beckoning you to buy virtual real estate in the net’s newly established red light district. And while Amsterdam is famous for its own such area, it’s another part of town and an entirely different meaning that Dutch boutique Patta looks to get across with the spot-markers on their latest collaboration with Asics. The Patta x Asics Gel Saga II is marked with its triple-Xs in commemoration of this as the third classic runner they’ve resurrected together, and if the next couple years are anything like what’s happened in the wake of their Gel Lyte III and Gel Lytespeed teamups, we’re in for quite a treat. This pair goes with a high contrast colorway you might call Chicago-esque were it not for select bright green accents, this twist a little one when compared to the unexpected variety of materials ranging from rubberized leather to horsehair. Few boutiques on the European sneaker scene command the same level of respect as Solebox. This Berlin based sneaker spot has long been the source of killer collaborations and by the looks of the teaser we’ve got here, a project with Asics is in the works. On the left we’ve got an Asics Gel Lyte III, the red hot model that just keeps gaining momentum thanks to high profile releases from the likes of Ronnie Fieg. On the right appears to the Asics Gel Saga II, a lesser known silhouette that saw a re-release in OG form this year and has also been scooped up by Patta for an upcoming release. They’ve been silent in terms of collaborations since last March’s teamup with Parra and Nike Sportswear resulted in 2010′s sneaker of the year, so you know when Patta comes through with word of their latest, the sneakerhead world will stop and take notice. The latest classic runner to feature the Dutch boutique’s logo is from Asics instead of Nike Sportswear, a return to the Japanese brand with whom they partnered for notable releases in 2007 and ’09. And just as those drops can be seen as significant to the return to prominence of both the Gel Lyte III and Gel Lytespeed, respectively, perhaps this new Patta x Asics Gel Saga II will prove to be the jumpstart this classic model needs to earn a little more time in the spotlight. Patta loves to use denim and corduroy and you can get a sense for what to expect from the colorway from this teaser image; any chance these will rank as highly as their excellent Air Max 1s? We’ve seen Nike Sportswear apply all manner of updates and tech-oriented additions to its classic running lineup, but the most detail oriented sneakerheads will remind the general population that the silhouette of almost all of these models has been altered slightly as construction methods have improved. An even smaller group, then, would be able to spot the subtle differences between the original Asics Gel Saga II from two decades ago when compared to the new models slated for release this Saturday, August 27th. Stores like Afew will only get six pairs of each OG Gel Saga II colorway and they’ve put together a short video depicting the shift in the model’s vamp.
