atmos air force 1 Classics Revisited: atmos x Nike Air Force 1 Low (2001)

NIKE AIR FORCE 1 LOW WEEK PART 2

It’s gotten pretty clear why the same names keep popping up in Classics Revisited collaborations. atmos, mita, Stash, Parra – these units of creativity are all responsible for building up that ‘specialty sneaker’ genre that made the sneaker game what it is today. Japan-based atmos continues to play a major role today with ongoing sneaker collaborations with various brands as well as a retail presence in multiple spots in the world, but it might’ve started with their Air Force 1 Low colorway of 2001. It’s about as basic as an Air Force 1 Low can get – a two-toned colorway in a history Navy/Grey ‘Georgetown’ colorway – but credit the amazing leather materials and the rather hidden surprise in the green insole to give these that kick. The atmos x Nike Air Force 1 Low is considered by many as one of the greatest AF1s of all-time, and considering the simplicity has yet to be duplicated in the same manner, these will continue to hold onto that distinction. More of the atmos x Air Force 1 Low is just ahead!

While atmos may have cut their teeth in the collabo circuit cranking out retro models, their output as of late has leaned a bit more contemporary. First it was the Nike Air Max 95+ BB that proved they were ready to take on more recent models, and now it’s the Nike Free Powerlines+ that gets their touch. The sneaker dons a rainbow road look that is colorful enough to be in line with the Olympic fare we’ve seen as of late, but the starry touch down the front certainly isn’t a USA one so maybe it’s mere coincidence. Click through to check out their take on this modern runner and stay tuned for release on the atmos x Nike Free Powerlines+.

atmos air max 95 Classics Revisited: atmos x Nike Air Max 95 (2003)

NIKE AIR MAX 95 WEEK

Where does the Air Max 95 rank among the greatest Nike Air Max sneakers of all-time? The Ninety-Five sticks out like a sore thumb and is likely the most recognizable Air Max of the History of Air, and even someone who isn’t familiar with Nikes is likely to remember the classic so long as you give a short description of the shoe’s build. The full-length multi-compartment Max Air unit, the 3M reflective stripe on the heel, the insane design that subliminally detailed the human anatomy – those features come together to form a distinct design that burns a hole in anyone’s memory, particularly if the flagship colorway boasts an electric neon green that appears to burst out from the seams of the Air bubble. Some considered the 95 to simply be the ‘Air Max’, owning the definitive label as the ultimate Nike Air-centric performance runner thanks to copious amounts of Air and a heady design concept. Additionally, the 95 was somewhat of a black sheep for a number of reasons; the initial design withstood some negative feedback, and and unlike the previous string of Air Max heritage runners, the 95 was not designed by Tinker Hatfield, but by Sergio Lozano. And while the Air Max 95 continues to be one of the most popular Nikes in the world, it wasn’t as much of a coveted model as the Air Max 1 and 90 were, especially during the era of collaborations and art-based projects.

That isn’t saying there weren’t any memorable Air Max 95s; the shoe we’re kicking Air Max 95 week off with here in Classics Revisited was partly responsible for making ‘atmos’, a Japan-based retailer, a household name in the States. In tandem with the ‘Viotech’ Air Max 1, atmos made its name with its design of the Air Max 95, which jumbled a mis-match of tones like brown, tan, gold, and rich purple with a solid gum outsole. atmos left the materials untouched, opting for the original suede and soft white mesh upper while tinkering with the ‘muscle fibers’ for color contrast. The atmos x Nike Air Max 95 is one of the earliest ’95′ collaborations to go down in what’s proven to be an overall limited selection of the category, but we’ll attribute that to the fact the original Black/Grey/Neon colorway just can’t be topped. If you’re not familiar with the atmos x Nike Air Max 95, check it out below and stay tuned for another great collection of 95 bangers that you might’ve forgotten about, and let us know if you have these in your collection!

NIKE AIR MAX 1 WEEK

Kicking off a fresh week of Classics Revisited segments is a look at some of the most coveted Air Max 1 releases of the last decade+ era. Although it would almost impossible to recount every single Air Max 1 release that has become available since the sneaker first debuted in 1987, we’d like to place a worthy spotlight on the ‘Ones’ the carried the sneaker game, and what better than one of the most memorable collaborations in history? Japanese retailer Atmos brought back the Air Max 1 and Air Safari in cohesion fifteen years after the two sneaker models debuted side-by-side; featuring a Safari print on the mudguard and ankle collar, a canvas twill material at the toe, a soft suede on the upper and heel, and a gum outsole, the Atmos x Nike Air Max 1 ‘Safari’ boasted incredible quality in craftsmanship in an outstanding colorway that grasped ‘Safari’ undertones to a tee. One of the most prominent features of the Atmos x Nike Air Max 1 is the miniature swoosh on the outer toe of the forefoot – a detail seen in very few earlier Air Max 1 ‘Retro’ releases of the 2000′s as well as recent Patta collaborations. The Atmos x Nike Air Max 1 ‘Safari’ stands as one of the undeniable heavyweights of sneaker history and is considered, by some, to be the greatest Air Max 1 ever. We’ve got more angles of this decade-old gem below so take a look and stay tuned as we will re-visit other Air Max 1 classics throughout the week!

The Air Max 95 is about to turn eighteen next year but we’ve been treated to a couple revisions in 2012, one of which is currently setting Japan ablaze.  The Nike Air Max+ 95 BB is off to a strong start thanks to collaborations with two of Tokyo’s top sneaker boutiques, one of whom even went so far as to create a special display for all of Nike Sportswear’s Air Max classics in honor of their BBs.  atmos‘ new Air Max+ 95 BB headlines a group that includes the ‘What the Max’ Fuse set in addition to new 95 No-Sews and AM90 Hyperfuses.  One of the more intriguing elements therein compares the modern full-length Max Air cushion that debuted in 2009 to the original encapsulated airbag hidden away on pre-Visible Air drops like the Tailwind.  It’s crazy to see how far Nike has come in two decades in just those two frames, then zoom out and see even more of this incredible journey on display (and you can even buy them!).  Check it out in greater detail below, let us know how this compares to the most impressive in-store display you’ve seen and stick with Sneaker News for more insights on the Japanese sneakerhead scene.

atmos x Nike Air Max 95+ BB – New Images

When we mention an ‘atmos Air Max 95′, chances are, you’re picturing the 2003 collabo whose Smolder, Khaki and Metallic Gold build foreshadowed the rise of both collaborative designs and the use of earth tones to enhance the wearability of classic performance models.  Nearly a decade later, both are well established in what we now know as the ‘lifestyle sneaker’ market, and though its pristine build is quite unlike their ’03s, atmos’ upcoming Nike Air Max 95+ BB is likely to earn a similarly memorable reputation.  It’s worth noting that the sole in these new images appears more golden than the earlier bluer leaning appearance, which might mean anything from a sample to a slight variation for a WMNS release.  In any case, we get our first look at these with five Olympic Rings-colored laces in addition to the white base color, and with the popularity of relatively simple designs approaching the white summer sneaker season, we can’t help but wonder how many other designs will follow suit.  atmos once again runs ahead of the pack, and their Air Max 95+ BB will make waves on the same April 28th launch date that Nike Basketball issues several ‘Home’ versions of their Elite Series.  Click through to see more images and let us know which of those upcoming white/gold kicks catches your eye.
